You can’t help when sitting in the ninth floor press box being awed at the beautiful view of New York City and the fact that the Lions are battered and bruised but ready to make a valiant effort for win #2.

Well the effort was valiant from the offense but sadly with what is becoming a precedent, the defense was pitiful. Dre’ Bly who was certainly not afraid to make comments against his offense last season but has done nothing but play like crap this season and that pathetic play continued today with him getting burned. The fear that NFL QB's once had to throw at Dre’ is now a salivating opportunity to attack a DB whose game can’t live up to his mouth.

Let’s be fair, it isn’t all Dre’s fault, but as a captain and a perennial Pro Bowler who has never been one to shut his mouth when he is criticizing others he certainly hasn’t lived up to his part of the deal and as a captain he hasn’t done what great players do and made his defensive teammates any better. With the loss of Shaun Rogers the DT tackle that was suspended for 4 games after failing a NFL drug test the defense didn’t do it’s part in helping the Lions get win #2. With the loss of the two starting DT’s that certainly hurt but the Lions weren’t facing the Steelers today, they were going against an equally pathetic Jets team that the Lions had no business losing to.

What these Lions need to know is that they are playing for next season now. Marinelli will not tolerate the effort put on display today and he is certainly watching. The offense that has lost so much as in the way of o-line talent continues to play well enough to win even with all the injuries.  Again, it all comes back on a defense that has to man up and play, something they aren’t doing.

Kitna again played well and Kevin Jones continues his great play. Certainly however the Lions offense has to be feeling the frustration of a defense that can’t even play well against the Jets. The D-line is just pathetic something that it has been since after the Seattle game and injuries are not an excuse when facing the Jets.Â

It isn’t a secret that the Lions spent a lot of money and draft picks on the offensive side but lets not forget that Hall and Edwards got big jack and they have done virtually nothing as have many of their defensive teammates. The fact is that the defense does not have many high picks, but it has a lot of money and that money isn’t producing. Clearly Henderson is being far out coached by his counterpart Martz.  Â

The LB core played reasonably well considering that they have to “play off” to cover up for a incompetent defensive backfield led by two very over paid players Bly and Bryant. Take heart Lions fans, the offense is showing us something to have hope in for the future with a potent offense, it will now take some wholesale changes on the defense starting in theur mind. As I am writing this high above the stadium I am mindful of another NFL talent name Joe Willie who had a big mouth, the difference was that he performed what his mouth spoke. Something that with free agency and the draft, the Lions can address quickly in the off- season.

Sadly however all the high paid talent on the defense just doesn’t man up and get better, they are to busy eating crow. How does it taste Dre...Hall...Edwards....Kennedy...Shaun...Bryant...get the hint?
