Lions Re-Sign DE Kalimba Edwards

Allen Park, Mich.- The Detroit Lions announced today that they have re-signed DE Kalimba Edwards to a five-year deal. Additional contract terms were not disclosed.

Edwards enters his fifth NFL season with momentum from a strong performance in 2005. He led Detroit in sacks (7.0) while finishing with 31 tackles (21 solo), two forced fumbles and a team-leading three fumble recoveries. Edwards has 111 career tackles (72 solo), 19 sacks (111.5 yards), seven pass defenses, four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries after four seasons with the Lions, who drafted him in the second round (35th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.

As a rookie in 2002, Edwards played in all 16 games and led Detroit with 6.5 sacks and was the first Lions rookie since Tracy Scroggins (7.5, 1992) to lead the team in sacks. He also had a career-best 39 tackles (23 solo) as well as a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Prior to the 2003 season, Edwards was diagnosed with a sports hernia injury. He chose to play through the season and registered 19 tackles (13 solo) and two sacks (18 yards) while playing in 15 games before being placed on the reserve/injured list due to a torn groin muscle.
