The weakest part of the Lions is their defense. It certainly doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that out. The worst part of that defense is the CB’s and sadly the Lions chose not to address it with either a free agent (Kelly Herndon) or as I had hoped, Paul Oliver from Georgia in the supplemental draft.

The Lions chose not to pick up the man that many had projected as a first round pick in the 2008 draft but while he was passed by the Lions he was taken by the Chargers. The other will be starting in Tennessee.

The Lions felt they had addressed their CB need with two picks in the draft, but while neither one will be on the roster opening day to help the Lions (props to the scouting department), one Super Bowl contender will have Oliver on their roster that was already among the leagues best at the CB position before he got there.

The Lions players have made a lot of bold predictions (and no one on the staff has backed down from them) and I have no issue with that if they produce. Remember later in the season when the Lions are struggling with very little depth or quality that they could have had Paul Oliver who will be competing for a Super Bowl and free agent Kelly Herndon who will be starting for the Titans.

The Lions made some bold moves by essentially ignoring the CB spot in the draft and free agency and they have to live with it. Let’s hope that while they are living with it, the fans aren’t enduring it. Hopefully Fernando and Stanley stay healthy because the CB spot is going to be a make or break position on this team.

If healthy, I have a lot of confidence in Bryant and Wilson who made great progress, but after those two the drop off is too bleak to have not addressed the issue more. Oliver and Herndon could have been a huge help, but the Lions didn’t feel like they needed it. I hope they’re right!
