Lions WR Roy Williams Talks about His Contract Situation, T.O.'s new Deal, Rookie Wage Cap, and His Future with the Lions All Right Here!

Reporter (on Terrell Owens contract): You feel bad? Roy: No. Reporter: Not even joking? Roy: No. Reporter: Didn’t you notice what he got? Roy: Three for 27,

Reporter (on Terrell Owens contract): You feel bad?

Roy: No.

Reporter: Not even joking?

Roy: No.

Reporter: Didn’t you notice what he got?

Roy: Three for 27, something like that. 12.9 guaranteed, that’s all I saw.

Reporter: So you noticed?

Roy: Yeah

Reporter: Does that make any impact on you?

Roy: I don’t know.

Reporter: Make any impression on you?

Roy: No.

Reporter: Would you like them to talk to you before camp?

Roy: No, they can talk to me whenever they want too. I’m like 7-11 baby, I’m always open, even on the field.

Reporter: What about on the field, I mean, you weren’t out here last week, were you just taking a week off?

Roy: No. I was trying to get there, there was just bad weather in Houston and bad weather coming from Lafayette so I had to wait two days in a row, so I called the coaches and they knew where I was at so it wasn’t a big deal.

Reporter: You weren’t here Monday either right?

Roy: This past Monday, no.

Reporter: Same thing, or…?

Roy: No that was my fault, I booked it wrong. I booked it on the second instead of the first.

Reporter: Some guys are here everyday, some guys are here off and on, you’re more of the off and on. Is that a big deal, how do you arrange for that or schedule that?

Roy: I don’t know. I’m an OTA guy, I want to be here OTA’s and get some good sun down there in Texas. I like to run in the heat. I feel I’m a better person and a better athlete when I run in the heat. So I get down there to run in the heat and get up here for OTA’s and for the team functions. That’s the way I operate.

Reporter: The way that they’re adjusted the offense, did you have any adjustment period, is it the same passing play so you know what you need to know?

Roy: Yeah it’s pretty much the same, it’s pretty much the same.

Reporter: Just on a general level, what do veterans get out of these OTA’s, I mean Tatum’s only been down here a few times, Calvin wasn’t here today. Is there a big deal to miss one or two over the course of a month and a half or two?

Roy: I mean, my opinion, I don’t think so. We know what guys can do, especially the veteran guys, Calvin’s still a rookie though, but, he knows what to do, we know what he’s going to give us on Sunday. So it’s not a big deal if he’s not going to be here or I’m not going to be here, but we know at some point we’re going to be here, we’re just not going to be like…screw OTA’s or screw the Detroit Lions, we’re going to show up and we’re going to work hard when we get here.

Reporter: Part of my reason in asking is some guys won’t show up for OTA’s because they’re unhappy with their contract, does that apply to you too?

Roy: I’m fine, I don’t know where you all get these reports. I’m going to get paid whatever you said. I’m getting paid, but I’m not going to get paid that.

Reporter: What do you mean you’re not going to get paid that? You’re going to make a lot of money next year.

Reporter: One way or another, whether it’s this year or next year.

Roy: Man I make a lot of money this year.

Reporter: Yes.

Reporter: We’re talking about NFL money. Not your personal amount of money.

Roy: Yeah I mean you all can look it up they owe me 5.8 million this year. So why would I be mad, I’m not mad, I’m not missing OTA because I’m mad at the Detroit Lions. I missed them because my flights got cancelled.

Reporter: Let me ask you this, have you looked ahead to next year at all. Is that at all on your mind, in a negotiation year, a contract year.

Roy: I just put it in the Detroit Lions hands. I can’t control nothing that they do.

Reporter: You know people talk about how the contract year supposedly brings out the best in people. It also puts pressure on you too and I wonder if it’s a double edged thing or…

Roy: My best year should be every year, that’s the way I look at it. I don’t care about money man, money’s going to be there. I feel like I do what I’m supposed to do, in four years now, I should get paid anyways, I’m not just a one year wonder.

Reporter: Does that bother you that people are just saying they’re going to franchise you, does that bother you, wouldn’t you rather get a deal than be franchised?

Roy: I mean it’s a win-win situation. They owe me 5.8 this year and then a franchise tag will be 9 or 10 so that’s 14 million in two years so…

Reporter: But can you live on that?

Roy: I mean you can but I mean every player wants a deal done and I would love to get a deal done here for a long time. But if they don’t want to get it done, I’ll just have to go on with my business.

Reporter: You said you’re not going to get that kind of money talking about the TO stuff, what kind of money are you going to get?

Roy: I mean, I won’t get 12.9 guaranteed, I don’t think

Reporter: Really? You never know.

Roy: 12.9, you all don’t understand, 12.9 guaranteed, that’s like rookie money.

Reporter: Didn’t you get that once before?

Hondo: There has been a lot of talk from players today. They want to see a rookie wage scale so the guys like you earn it, would you support that?

Roy: I like guys coming in making their money. Is it fair? Yeah it’s fair. They worked hard in college, that makes our franchise tag go up so…

Hondo: Do you consider, Roy, the fact that there very well be an un-capped year after you get franchised?

Roy: Man I don’t play for the money, I play for the wins. I feel if I can help the team win. If I can get across the water to the pro bowl then that means that were doing good, money will fall into place.

Reporter: Can I ask you this though, until you get a long term deal, are you resigned to the fact that they’re going to wonder if you want to go to Dallas until it’s finally looked at?

Roy: Oh I get that all day, especially when I’m back at home. Dallas, Dallas, Dallas. Trade Roy Williams for Roy Williams. When are you going to be a Cowboy? So I won’t have to deal with that until I sign something here or become a free agent somewhere else.

Reporter: How did you respond?

Roy: I’d just laugh and be like, I don’t know. You know I don’t want to talk about football when I’m at home. That’s my time to relax and have fun and they understand that.

Reporter: Would you ever go to Matt and say, “Hey.”

Roy: Nope.
