MHSAA Basketball - Keep on Truckin'
Here we go! Basketball is in full swing! After a little break for Christmas and New Year’s, they will go hard at it until the state finals in late March. Sorry about being late with the start, but things have been crazy around the Cottrell household. Or maybe I’ll blame it on a sore arm from my tattoo I got recently after losing a bet to Hondo about the Michigan State vs. Central Michigan football game. Yea, sore arm, that’s it! Let’s move straight into the games!
High Score of the Week/Century Club Part 1
East Jackson 100 Manchester 94 (194 points)
East Jackson won this game without ever making a three point shot. Terry Calagon led the way for all scorers, scoring 28 points in the winning effort. He also pulled down 14 rebounds and tossed five assists. Aaron Griffiths scored 14 and made 11 assists helping East Jackson win the game. On the Manchester side, Josh Finley scored 27, followed by Matt Kemner with 26 points. EJ was able to break the full court press of Manchester using their speed and good passing.
Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week
Harper Woods Chandler Park 86 Capac 19 (67 points)
Derrick Walton Jr. led the scoring for HWCP with 17 points, 10 assists, and 10 steals. That’s a triple double in my book! Jalen Jemison scored 16. I couldn’t find any of the leading scorers for Capac.
Low Score of the Week
Cass City 29 Mayville 14 (43 points)
I couldn’t find any info about this one. The reporter must have fallen asleep in the first quarter.
Unsubstantiated Score This Week
I don’t know if this is accurate or not, but the MHSAA’s website has a game listed with a nearly unbelievable score. They had Flint Michigan School of the Deaf beating Burton St. Thomas More Academy by the score of 100-10. If that is a true score, then FMSD would be in the Century Club and be the BLOWOUT of the week. Can anyone shed some light on this game?
Future Spartan of the Week
Denzel Valentine – Lansing Sexton High School
Valentine has agreed to play for the Spartans. He is still in high school and was recently named the top player in the state by one sports writer. A few days ago, Sexton beat Howell 64-41. He scored 18 points, grabbed 10 boards, tossed five assists, and made five steals. He will be a very good player if he keeps developing at the rate he is. Many of the green and white faithful are exciting to get him into the program.
