MHSAA Basketball - Post Holiday Edition

Now that the holidays have come and gone, it’s time to get into some serious basketball action! There were a few breaks in the action since I last wrote,

Now that the holidays have come and gone, it’s time to get into some serious basketball action! There were a few breaks in the action since I last wrote, mainly because of the holidays. There is a huge slate of action going on from Crystal Falls in the Upper Peninsula to Dundee in southern Michigan. It will be a sprint from now until teams reach the Breslin Center on March 24th. Let’s move right into the action!

High Score of the Week

Ewen-Trout Creek 97 Wakefield-Marenisco 76 (173 points)

It isn’t typical that the highest scoring game in the state comes from the Upper Peninsula. This week, E-TC nearly put themselves into the century club! Their coach, Brad Besonen called it an outstanding effort. They were paced by Jordan LaPlant with a triple double (29 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists). Dillon Gordon scored 27 and Nick Hearns chipped in 15. For Wakefield, Eric Lane scored 24 followed by Pat Libertoski with 20 points.

Low Score of the Week

Detroit Mumford 33 Ypsilanti 31 (64 points)

This wasn’t a pretty game by any means. Ypsilanti scored six points in the second half and lost on a buzzer beater. On top of that, Detroit Mumford missed a layup in the final seconds and got two put-back shots! J. Hall paced Mumford with 10 points. Tristan Simmons also scored 10 points in the losing effort. Lavonte Davis scored four points and pulled down seven rebounds for Ypsilanti.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Toledo Bowsher 114 Petersburg-Summerfield 46 (68 points)

This game was part of the Warrior Classic at Emmanuel Christian High School in Toledo. Kharri Dailey nailed five three point shots in the second quarter and finished with 27 points. Eric Hopkins scored 19. A.J. VanKainen scored 15 in the losing effort for P-S. Brad Sweeny scored 12 points.

Future Spartan of the Week

Matt Costello – Bay City Western

One of the top players in one of the top basketball leagues in the state is Bay City’s Matt Costello. The Saginaw Valley League has produced many recent Class A state champions (mainly Saginaw High and Saginaw Arthur Hill).  In the league opener this week, Costello scored a double double with 24 points, 20 rebounds, and six blocks. During Christmas break, his team played in the Holiday Hoops Invitational. In their 73-72 loss to Detroit Martin Luther King, Costello was named game MVP. He scored 34 points, grabbed 26 rebounds, and blocked seven shots. The 6’9” power forward will graduate this spring and move down the road to East Lansing and don the green and white. In the meantime, he is shooting for a Saginaw Valley League title and a shot at a state championship.
