And away we go! FINALLY we have entered the district action for boys’ basketball season. Sorry to have such a short column this week but there wasn’t much information to go on. Next week I’m sure there will be plenty more information to go on. So again, I’m sorry for the column being so short lately. Andiamo! (that’s Italian for “we go”)

High Score of the Week

Melvindale 89 Dearborn Advance Tech 80 (169 points)

Melvindale pulled out a nice nine point victory over a high scoring Dearborn Advance Tech squad. Unfortunately, I could not find any information about the game. They will play Dearborn Heights Robichaud at home tonight, 7:30pm.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Clarkston 73 Holly 19 (54 points)

It’s never good to get beat like this in districts. But, in Holly’s defense, Clarkston is a very good basketball team that has only lost two games this season while Holly is a pretty young group. Clarkston was led by Mitch Baenziger with 21 points. Jordan Dasuqi scored 13 as well. For Holly, Nic Stoll led the way with six points. Parker Rowse scored five. Clarkston will play Fenton tonight.

Low Score of the Week

Spring Lake 33 Muskegon Orchard View 23 (66 points)

Spring Lake breezed by Muskegon Orchard View, who didn’t have the ideal season and finished 3-18. As the winner, Spring Lake advances to play Muskegon Heights tonight at 7pm.

Big Games

Tonight there is a big game in the Capital Area. Defending Class B State Champions Lansing Sexton, led by future Spartan Denzel Valentine, will be taking on a very good Lansing Catholic team. Like Stephen Bell from Bankhoops.com said, “Lansing Catholic Central is good enough to contend for a state title, in a year where Sexton didn’t have a load of D1 talent.” In Mid-Michigan, it’s The High vs. The Hill. Saginaw High, despite being the size of a Class B (Division 5 if you want to use football divisions), is a contender for a state title. Many people have picked them to make the semifinals. Both squads are loaded with talent and being the rivals they are, will want bragging rights as well as a chance to keep playing. Don’t forget about Saginaw Arthur Hill, they have D1 talent on their roster as well and anything can happen in a game like this. Another future Spartan, Matt Costello, will be taking his Bay City Western squad to play Midland Dow at Mount Pleasant High School. When his team beat Midland High earlier this week, he scored nine points, blocked four shots, and grabbed 14 rebounds in the 47-44 victory.
