MHSAA Boys Basketball - Finals Edition

I apologize for the tardiness of my column.  There is a baby girl I have been devoting a lot of time to!  Everyone is doing great though.  Especially the winners of the 2014 MHSAA Boys’ Basketball state championships!  Let's get right to the action.

Class A

Muskegon 91 Bloomfield Hills 67

The Big Reds won their first title in anything other than football since 1937.  Deshaun Thrower, recently named Mr. Basketball and soon to be Wolverine, had a good game.  He scored 21 points, tossed three assists, and grabbed three boards.  Teammate Deyonta Davis scored 26, 13 rebounds, three blocks, and an assist.  For Bloomfield Hills, Xzavier Reynolds scored 21 and had a pair of assists.  Yante Maten had 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocks.

Class B

Milan 78 Benton Harbor 59

This was a tale of coming back to the top.  The last Championship that Milan won in basketball was in 1948.  Sophomore at that time, Harlan Benjamin, was in attendance.  He gave a pep talk to the team and before they accepted the trophy, every single player went into the stands and gave the 81 year old a hug.  Milan's Latin Davis had a monster of a game.  He nailed all seven of his three point attempts and finished with 34 points.  Davis also grabbed five rebounds and tossed two assists.  Nick Perkins scored 24 points and had two assists.  For Benton Harbor, John Robinson Jr was the leading scorer.  He finished with 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists.  Jaton Gunn scored 16 and had three rebounds.

Class C

Detroit Consortium 61 Pewamo-Westphalia 44

The road was long and hard for Consortium. They did not play an easy schedule. Along the way, they beat Saginaw Arthur Hill, Romulus, and Detroit Southeastern from Class A as well as Detroit Country Day and Detroit Douglass from Class B. Consortium’s Joshua Jackson led his team with 22 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, three assists, and a steal. Ronald Booth scored 14, grabbed three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Rudy Smith also scored 14 and had four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. For P-W, Lane Smith led all scorers with 23 points. He also had seven rebounds, an assist, and a block. Nick Spitzley scored 10 and had three assists in the loss.

Class D

Southfield Christian 63 Adrian Lenawee Christian 61

This game was a nail biter! Two of the starters for Southfield Christian fouled out in the fourth quarter when the game was extremely close. Hitting foul shots over the last minute of the game kept Southfield Christian ahead and helped them win the game. Bakari Evelyn scored 28 points, grabbed seven rebounds, tossed four assists, and had four steals. He was the main person nailing shots from the charity stripe to keep his team in the lead for the last minute or so. Lindsay Hunter IV was one of the players in foul trouble, but still had 16 points, a rebound, and a block. For Adrian Lenawee Christian, Kingsley scored 22 points seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. He was a big part of slowing down the fast break offense of Southfield Christian. Grant Hohlbein scored 15 points, grabbed four boards, and tossed three assists.
