MHSAA Boys Basketball - Into February We Go!

First of all, I’d like to apologize for the lack of an article last week. Work was absolutely crazy and I had NO time to write because I didn’t even get lunch breaks. I don’t currently have internet access at home either, so it’s tough. That should be resolved in the next couple of weeks though. Now that my pity party is over, we can get back to the real issue at hand, high school hoops! It was amazing to me how many teams went over the century mark in the past two weeks. Nuts!

High Score of the Week/Century Club

Detroit Country Day 110 Southfield Christian 75 (185 points)

It was a wild scoring game. The Yellowjackets of Detroit Country Day led 50-33 at halftime and kept the pedal to the metal all night. Robert Puleikis led the scoring with 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two blocked shots. He was followed by Austin Price and Jordan Hall. Price scored 15, pulled down five rebounds, tossed three assists, and blocked three shots. Hall scored 15 as well while also getting eight rebounds and three assists.

Low Score of the Week

Richmond 31 Algonac 26 (59 points)

This barn burner had plenty of action. What it was, I have no idea. No one reported on this game, but by the sounds of it, it was a game of ball control.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week/Century Club

Dearborn Advanced Tech 100 Taylor Trillium 25 (75 points)

I’m starting to feel for Taylor Trillium. They are on my list virtually every week. I know how bad it feels to do your best and still not be close. Keep your heads up, boys! When it was happening to me, they called it “character building.” Someone also told me that “just because you are a character doesn’t mean you have character,” ...or was that from Pulp Fiction?

Century Club

Taylor Truman 104 Ypsilanti Willow Run 51

Taylor Truman hit the century mark with a nice win over Willow Run. Yet again, no box scores were found. Congrats to Truman for getting to the century mark.

Century Club

Traverse City St. Francis 104 Benzie Central 78

Sean Sheldon was the star of this game. He’s 6’9” and set a Gladiator record for single game scoring. He got 46 of his team’s 104 points that night. For Benzie Central, Cory Taylor led the way with 25 points.

NO! We Want To Keep Playing!

Dearborn Fordson 82 Dearborn Edsel Ford 74 (5OT)

It was nearly over in regulation, but Fordson’s Abass Kanaan nailed a three pointer with three seconds left to tie the game. He finished with 33 points and 16 rebounds. Not a bad night for a 5’9” player! Nizam scored 15 and Harb had nine points in the winning effort. For Edsel Ford, Algomai scored 21 to lead his team. Yahya scored 20 which included 12 in the overtime periods.

Future Spartan of the Week

Kenny Kaminski, Medina High School, Medina, Ohio

I wanted to write about this young power forward from Ohio, but when I started to research him, I found he had been injured. During football season, he broke his shoulder and has not played this season. Here’s hoping he has a speedy recovery and hits the weights to gain his strength back
