MHSAA Boys Basketball Report - February 6th, 2014

It’s February! That means in less than a month, we will get into district action! This is an exciting time. Teams are playing for conference crowns and gym banners. Everyone has got to start playing their best basketball of the season, or deal with the fact that in a month they might never play organized basketball again. Let’s take a look at the action from last week.

Low Score of the Week

White Lake Lakeland 23 Waterford Kettering 21 (OT) (44 points)

Waterford Kettering likes to play slow ball. They will hold it as long as possible before taking a shot. In the winning effort for White Lake Lakeland, Jacob Menzel had eight points. Tim Brotherton, Brad Govan, and Nick Troxell each scored four points. Troxell nailed a jumper with just over three minutes left in overtime that proved to be the game winner/only bucket of overtime. For Waterford Kettering, Jacob Netschke scored seven to lead his team. Noah Stinson scored five.

Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Mendon 91 Howe Military Academy 24 (67 points)

The quotes from Mendon coach David Swanwick say it all. He told Mlive, “We started to share the ball really well; we didn’t force shots. We came with good intensity.” Zach Darmofal had 19 points and four steals. Jordan Medich scored 16 and grabbed seven rebounds. Marcus Craft scored 11, stole three balls, and tossed three assists. No stats could be found for Howe School.

High Score of the Week

Rochester Adams 87 Bloomfield Hills 85 (OT) (172 points)

This game must have been awesome. A big mistake from Thomas Girdler let Bloomfield Hills back into the game with 10 seconds left. Then he missed a three pointer at the end of regulation. In overtime, Rochester Adams Akhemji Williams nailed a three point shot with only 15 seconds left. Khalil Gracey of Bloomfield Hills made an eight footer with six seconds remaining to take an 85-84 lead. Akhemji was double teamed and forced to pass on the ensuing possession. He found Girdler open in the corner and he nailed the shot as time expired to win the game for Rochester Adams. Akhemji Williams led all scorers with 31 points and nine assists. Thomas Girdler scored 16. For Bloomfield Hills, Yante Maten finished with 28 points, 20 rebounds, and seven blocks. Khalil Gracey scored 27 and had 10 assists.

Century Club Part Three

Flint International Academy 103 Owendale-Gagetown 69

Not only did Flint International Academy laid a smack down on Owendale-Gagetown, they also handed them their first loss of the season. Leading the way for FIA was Simeun McGee with 25 points, two steals, four assists, and two rebounds. Tyree Keyes scored 22 points, had four steals, grabbed three rebounds, and tossed an amazing 13 assists. For Owendale-Gagetown, Ben Good scored 24 points. Jake Wright scored 12. Brett Morrish and Quinn Smith each scored 11.
