MHSAA Boys Basketball Report - January 9, 2014

Now that our holiday break is over, it’s time to get back to some serious hoops action! There were some nice tournaments over the break as well as plenty of canceled games. It might be cold outside, but the court is heating up from New Buffalo to Ironwood and Sault Ste. Marie to Temperance Bedford. Where ever your team is, go out and watch some high school basketball, regardless of if it’s a boys or girls team. Let’s examine the games from the past few weeks.

High Score of the Week

Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central 93 Wyoming 84 (177 points)

The team was able to set the school’s scoring record with 93 points, beating the old score of 92 points set back in 1994. Leading GRFH Central in scoring was Connor Kelly with 22 points. Alex Dykema scored 19 while Lucas Fotis chipped in a 17 point effort. Wyoming likes to keep the game up-tempo, and succeeded in doing just that. But after they fell behind, they were forced for foul. Forest Hills Central hit 12 of 14 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. For Wyoming, Carlos Amoros led all scorers with 23 points. He was followed close behind by Jacob Traylor’s 21. Nicholas Staten scored 19.

Low Score of the Week

Detroit Catholic Central 37 Dearborn Divine Child 22 (59 points)

In this low scoring affair, Charlie Ryan led DCC with nine points. Scott Combs scored 7 in the losing effort.

BLOWOUT of the Week

Ithaca 86 Merrill 20 (66 points)

In the Tri Valley Conference West Division, Ithaca rules the football field. This time, they dominated Merrill on the basketball court as well. At the end of the first quarter, Ithaca led 28-8. Nine different Ithaca players scored, with Spence DeMull leading the way with 14 points. Eli Villalobos scored 13 and Levi Lehman scored 12. For Merrill, Hunter DeBeau scored eight to lead his team. Jaden Reiber scored six. Merrill scored zero points in the fourth quarter.

Future Spartan

Both of the players committed to Michigan State for the recruiting class of 2014 are from out of state. Lourawls Nairn is from Bel Aire, Kansas. Javon Bess is from Gahanna, Ohio. If we look at the recruiting class of 2015, we can find a player from the mitten state. Deyonta Davis, a 6-foot-9 junior center plays for Muskegon. In Muskegon’s 73-66 win over Chicago Curie on January 4th, Davis had a fantastic game. He scored 24 points, blocked five shots, and grabbed 14 rebounds. That included one overtime period.
