MHSAA Boys Basketball Report - March 5th, 2014

First, I’d like to apologize. Last week, I didn’t post a column. I have an EXCELLENT excuse. My second daughter was born last Tuesday! Elizabeth and mommy are doing great. My wife and I are very excited about the birth of our second daughter. She was calm, cool, and collected during labor. With everything going as smooth as possible, it made me realize how lucky I am. That being said, it’s playoff time! The districts began this week and there have already been some awesome games. Let’s take a look at what transpired over the past week.

Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Ecorse 96 Detroit Cristo Rey 35 (61 points)

I feel for Cristo Rey. They didn’t not end the season the way they probably wanted to. Now they have to wait until December to get that taste out of their mouths.

High Score of the Week

Grand Blanc 92 Holly 86 (OT) (178 points)

Grand Blanc was beating up Holly. They led 26 to 13 at the end of one quarter. Holly wasn’t about to be knocked down though. They fought back and even held an 11 point lead with just over five minutes left to play. Unfortunately for Holly, that’s when it began to unravel. Leading the way for Grand Blanc was Alexander Brackett with 26 points. Tre’von Avery scored 19. Jaylin Blake chipped in 15 points. On the losing side, Jake Daniels led all scorers with 27 points. Kyle Woodruff scored 24 and Joshua Simms scored 21.

Low Score of the Week

Calumet 34 Hancock 23 (OT) (57 points)

Things weren’t looking good in the fourth quarter for Calumet. They scored zero fourth quarter points. Overtime went a bit better, with stops on defense and making free throws on consecutive possessions. Calumet’s Josh O’Dell scored 11 points to lead his team and set a new personal career high. For Hancock, Alex Almquist scored 11 points in his final varsity game.
