MHSAA Football - District Finals - Results

The weather has really started to get cold. I even saw snow yesterday in Saginaw! Even though I’ve seen snow, the games are really starting to heat up. The action on the field was red hot. Most of the games profiled came down to one possession. These are the kind of games we all love. One mistake or penalty can totally change a game. In some cases, it did! Let’s take a look at the district final games from across the state!

Lansing Area – Division 4

Lansing Sexton 32 Lake Fenton 14

This game was pretty close. Sexton got off to a great start, scoring twice in the first quarter. Javon Wray ran in from the one yard line and Javon Cooney found the end zone from 14 yards out.  It was Lake Fenton who found the end zone first, with a 54 yard TD run by Mitchell Bollinger. Lake Fenton found the end zone once more before halftime on a one yard run by Pete Plasters to knot up the score at the break. No one scored in the third quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to Sexton as they scored 18 points. A’Vonte Bell ran 19 times for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Cooney ran five times for 42 yards and a score while also grabbing five passes for 65 yards and another score. Quarterback Malick Mack completed eight of his 13 passes for 90 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also gained 27 yards on three carries. Wray rushed 11 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. Lansing Sexton will host Saginaw Swan Valley Friday night at 7pm.

Saginaw – Division 5

Millington 33 Frankenmuth 29

It looked like the Eagles had this one wrapped up. They had intercepted a pass and had the ball on their five yard line with less than two minutes remaining. Then, Colin Meacham recovered a fumble for Millington. Three plays later, they punched it in on a one yard Caleb Wascher run for the winning score. The Cardinals came out of the game with three second half turnovers. With a 29-20 lead in the fourth quarter, ‘Muth tailback Brian Stearns busted a 40 yard touchdown run. Unfortunately, it was called back. On the next play, Meacham broke through and forced a fumble, picked it up, and rumbled 62 yards for a score. Millington quarterback Caleb Wascher completed nine of his 14 passes for 100 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. He also ran eight times for a negative one yard and a touchdown. Chase Maxon was the leading rusher with 24 carries for 112 yards and a score. Wyatt Munson was the leading receiver with five catches for 50 yards and a score. Frankenmuth quarterback Nick Volk completed 10 of his 18 passes for 172 yards, two scores, and two interceptions. Volk also rushed for 57 yards and a score on 12 carries. Brian Sterns was the leading Frankenmuth running back with 153 yards and a score on 13 runs while also catching two passes for 41 yards and a score. Tyler Janson grabbed four passes for 76 yards and a score. Millington heads to Muskegon Oakridge for a Saturday game at 1pm.

This wasn’t an easy win. Bedford was trailing 22-8 in the first half. They marched back and tied the game with four minutes remaining and took the lead with only 42 ticks left on the clock. Alec Hullibarger rushed for 125 yards and two scores while also making three receptions for 44 yards and two more scores. Quarterback Brad Ross completed seven of his 13 passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 195 yards. Connor Clemets ran for 91 yards and a score. He was knocked out of the game with an injury. For Saline, quarterback Trent Theisen completed 15 of his 23 passes for 179 yards and an interception. He also ran twice for 13 yards. Nader El-Awar grabbed five passes for 53 yards, Brad McCormick had four receptions for 56 yards, and Jimmy Craig caught four for 55 yards. Griffin Wooley was the leading running back with 12 runs for 101 yards and three touchdowns. Temperance Bedford hosts Detroit Catholic Central on Friday night.

Grand Rapids – Division 3

Byron Center 28 Wayland Union 13

Wayland Union may have had one of the best rushing attacks in Grand Rapids, but Byron Center found a way to keep them between the 30’s. They forced two turnovers and played very well, fundamentally. For Byron Center, quarterback Jake Bylsma completed all four of his passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Cody Babbs had a 16 yard TD reception while Zach Tietsma grabbed two passes for 37 yards and a score. Bylsma was also the leading rusher with 86 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Jarod Rodgers ran 11 times for 37 yards and a score. Erik Chard ran eight times for 97 yards. Wayland Union quarterback Trevor Clausen completed two of his six passes for 20 yards and an interception. Mason Evers grabbed one for 11 yards while Jack Phillips had one for nine yards. Clausen also rushed three times for 20 yards. Mike Muklusicak had 26 runs for 120 yards, but was held out of the end zone. Jack Phillips carried 17 times for 78 yards and a score. Aaron Robyler only toted the rock twice, but gained six yards and scored. Byron Center travels to Stevensville Lakeshore for a Saturday game.
