MHSAA Football Playoffs - District Championship Results
The Districts are over. We saw what the top teams did to the competition. These teams are getting closer and closer to Ford Field. They can’t look too far ahead though; the teams who do that end up watching the championship game from the stands. Since it is Election Day, I won’t be long winded like a politician and cut straight to the good stuff.
Muskegon 15 Lowell 13
This was a very close game. Muskegon struck first on a 12 yard run by John King in the first quarter. Lowell battled back with quarterback Kyler Shurlow finding Benjamin Bigham for a 47 yard touchdown strike in the second. Kanon Dean rushed for a one yard score in the last minute of the third quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to the Big Reds as Marcus Smith hauled in a 46 yard touchdown pass from DeShaun Thrower and Adrian Briseno nailed a 27 yard field goal to put them up for good with 1:41 left in the game. Muskegon quarterbacks Jalen Smith went one for two for one yard and ran nine times for 84 more while Thrower completed both of his passes for 77 yards and a score while also running four times for another 54 yards. John King ran seven times for 27 yards and punched one into the end zone and also hauled in a 31 yard reception. Marcus Smith made two catches for 47 yards and a score. On the Lowell side, Kyler Shurlow completed seven of his 12 passes for 123 yards and a score and also ran 28 times for 74 yards. Kanon Dean ran 10 times for 31 yards and a score. Benjamin Bigham caught four passes for 97 yards and a score. Muskegon will play Midland this week.
Ithaca 49 Hemlock 14
This game surprised many people. There were many who thought Hemlock would line up and run right past Ithaca.  That was not the case. Ithaca’s quarterback Travis Smith made play after play as the Yellowjackets dominated the Huskies to win their 39th straight game. Smith completed 24 of his 35 passes for 343 yards and five touchdowns while also running for 86 yards. Jared Evers ran three times for 17 yards and a score while also catching five passes for 69 yards and two scores. Caden Kipp led the team in receiving yards with 112 on six catches. Zach Allen hauled in seven passes for 90 yards and two scores. Logan Hessbrook caught one pass for 23 yards and a touchdown. Hemlock quarterback Chase Weichmann completed three of his eight passes for 152 yards and a score and also ran four times for two yards. Matt Jesse was the leading running back with three runs for 38 yards. Dylan Honsinger ran eight times for 12 yards and a score. Garrett Culver caught one pass for 77 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Hagarty also caught one pass for 73 yards. Ithaca will play Montrose for the Regional Title.
Ogemaw Heights 48 Remus Chippewa Hills 27
The season started out poorly for Ogemaw Heights. They had lost a few games and were in danger of not making the playoffs. There was negativity amongst teammates. No one was happy. The team decided to play together and was able to make the playoffs. Now, they are in the Regional final. Ogemaw Heights quarterback Ben Hartley attempted two passes, but both fell incomplete. The team was able to run for over 500 yards, so passing wasn’t a priority. RB Brandon Benac rushed 35 times for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Devin Griffus also scored three times while gaining 106 yards on 16 attempts. Tommy DeMatio chipped in 118 yards on 15 runs. For Chippewa Hills, quarterback Jake Tarbell completed seven of his 19 passes for 96 yards and a score while also running 11 times for 45 more. The other quarterback, Ty Schafer, completed four of his nine passes for 141 yards and two scores. Trent Karcher only ran the ball four times, but gained 127 yards and scored twice. Jason Peacock rushed eight times for 24 yards and a score while also grabbing a 46 yard touchdown reception. Ogemaw Heights plays Comstock Park for the Regional Championship.
Plymouth 20 Livonia Churchill 14
Churchill may have won in the regular season, but it was Plymouth who won this time around and will continue their season. The game wasn’t an easy win though. Churchill came out and scored first, but Plymouth had a 20 point second quarter. Churchill scored early in the fourth quarter and got the ball on their 30 yard line with a minute left. They were able to move the ball, but a pass was intercepted on the 18 yard line with 30 seconds left to preserve the win for Plymouth. They will play Detroit Catholic Central this week in the Regional Final. Plymouth quarterback Jamarl Eiland completed three of his seven passes for 51 yards and a score. He also was the leading rusher with 17 runs for 125 yards. Derrick Rossell ran 16 times for 52 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards. Connor Stella hauled in one touchdown pass from 24 yards away. For Churchill, quarterback Seth Suida completed 14 of his 27 passes for 155 yards. Romella Brown was the work horse, running for two scores and 141 yards on 26 attempts. Jeremy Lewis caught five balls for 47 yards. Zachary Zoltowski grabbed three passes for 40 yards.
