MHSAA Football Playoffs - Pre District Results
Now that the first round is finished, teams will start to play for trophies. Sure, some teams have already won a trophy for winning their conference title, but these are very important as well. With teams vying to be at Ford Field later this month, it can be a small play here or there that will put you in or take you out of a game. There were some very close games last week and a few blowouts. That will happen in the first round. Expect the games to be closer and tougher from here on out. Now let’s look at the slate of action from this past weekend.
Mid-Michigan
Flint Powers Catholic 35 Frankenmuth 13 (Division 5)
The Chargers of Flint Powers Catholic got off to a quick start. In the first quarter, they scored 21 points and held a 21-7 advantage. That lone score for the Eagles was a 79 yard kickoff return by Ian Fischer. Blaine Malochleb was the other person to score for Frankenmuth on a four yard run but that was in the third quarter. Malochleb finished with 17 carries for 95 yards and that score. Travis Davis also ran 17 times for 66 yards. For Flint Powers, quarterback Garrett Pougnet completed four of his seven passes for 25 yards. When he tucked the ball and ran, which he did 13 times, he gained 98 yards and scored three times. Drew Fortier was the second leading rusher with eight carries for 94 yards that included an 80 yard touchdown jaunt. Prescott Myers caught two passes for 21 yards. Powers will play at Millington this week
West Coast
Holland 27 Stevensville-Lakeshore 16 (Division 3)
This has been one of the best seasons ever for Holland. They have never won eight games in a season. Before this past Friday, they had never won a playoff game. Now, both of the records are in the dust. Holland Dutch quarterback Corey Willis carried the ball 42 times for 308 yards and four touchdowns. He also completed three of his seven passes for 19 yards. The man even caught a nine yard pass and intercepted two footballs. For the Lancers of Stevensville-Lakeshore, Johny Nate completed 12 of his 22 passes for 178 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Elliot Lemon completed four of his 11 passes for 44 yards and two interceptions. Mark Cox was the leading rusher with eight attempts for 61 yards. Austin Kaiser caught seven footballs for 92 yards. Holland will play Zeeland East Saturday night.
Detroit
Canton 24 Plymouth 21 (Division 1)
This game came down to the wire. Junior kicker Scott Piwowar nailed a 35 yard field goal as time expired to give Canton the win. For Plymouth, quarterback Shaun Austin completed five of his 10 passes for 74 yards while also running 10 times for 59 yards and a score. Donte Fox was the workhorse for his team, running 15 times for 149 yards and a score. Nathaniel Emminger caught two passes for 35 yards. On the Canton side of the ball, quarterback Kyle Adams completed four of his six passes for 51 yards and ran three times for 22 more. Kevin Buford ran the ball 19 times for 73 yards and a score. He also caught three passes for 47 yards. Zac Merillat ran 10 times for 74 yards. Canton will play at Detroit Catholic Central Saturday afternoon.
North
Ishpeming 36 Ishpeming Westwood 6 (Division 7)
Westwood came out like gangbusters. Zachary Rankinen took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score. Unfortunately for the Patriots, that would be their last score. Ishpeming’s Derek Slone scored twice and gained 86 yards on the ground. Jacob Finegan scored a five yard touchdown. Tyrus Millimaki returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown. Adam Prisk scampered 32 yards for a score as well. Ishpeming will play at Iron River West Iron County Saturday afternoon.
