The Pre-District round is in the books! From here on out through the state finals, teams play for trophies. In the end, there will only be nine teams to take home the trophy that says “State Champions 2013.” Many of the games this past week were close, but some were blowouts. Let’s get into the games and see what happened last week!

Upper Peninsula

Sault Ste. Marie 48 Ionia 18

It was a great night for the Soo. They were able to make some big plays throughout the game. After a first quarter that saw a combined 33 points for scored, no one found the end zone in the second quarter and Sault Ste. Marie took a 21-12 lead into the break. The second half was mostly big plays for the Blue Devils. Quarterback Michael James only attempted two passes and completed one of them for a 50 yard touchdown. He also ran the ball nine times for 74 yards and two scores. Jordan Houghton caught that lone touchdown pass. Leading the rushing attack was Raynell Anderson with 16 carries for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Justin Delisle carried five times for 118 yards and a score. On the Ionia side, quarterback Austin Gregory completed 10 of his 18 passes for 150 yards and a score. He also ran 18 times for 128 yards and a score. Kyle Parks rushed 19 times for 61 yards and a score. Colin Prominski was the leading receiver with five catches for 103 yards and a score. Sault Ste. Marie plays Mount Pleasant this week in the Division 3 District Championship.

West Coast

Grand Rapids Christian 14 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern 13

It was a tough game, pitting one of the area’s best defenses against one of the area’s best offenses. Midway through the third quarter, the score was 13-0 in favor of Forest Hills Northern. Special team miscues hurt the team though. A missed extra point and a muffed punt were crucial to what GRC was able to do. For GR Christian, quarterback Tyler Sigler completed 11 of his 29 passes for 155 yards and two interceptions. His favorite receiver was Dwayne Barfield, who grabbed three passes for 52 yards. Scoring both touchdowns was Juwan Jarnegan who found the end zone twice on four carries and gained nine yards. Dominic Paiz rushed 12 times for 42 yards. On the Forest Hills Northern side, quarterback Spencer Peterson completed nine of his 21 passes for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Peter Frisk grabbed two passes for 67 yards. Jacob Howe and Justin Farah each rushed for 17 yards, but Farah found the end zone. Wyatt Batdorff grabbed a 37 yard touchdown reception. Grand Rapids Christian will play Zeeland West in Division 3 action.

Detroit

Macomb Dakota 19 Warren De la Salle 14

This game was a throwback. Two “tough as nails” teams playing smash mouth football. The weather wasn’t great and both teams wanted the win. In the end, it was big plays by Dakota that helped propel them to victory. Dakota quarterback Tyler Crowell completed 19 of his 32 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball five times for 19 more. Maurice Moon led the team in rushing attempts for eight for nine yards. Mustafa Abdur-Rahman made big plays throughout the night. He had three receptions for 36 yards and two touchdowns while also intercepting a pass late in the game to help preserve the victory. Leading receiver for the Cougars was Angelo Dimaggio who had five catches for 136 yards and a score. Benji Marshall chipped in four runs for 21 yards, six receptions for 72, and one kickoff return for 46 yards. For Warren De La Salle, quarterback Gio Rescigno completed seven of his 21 passes for 61 yards and two interceptions. He was much more efficient when he ran the ball. Gio rushed 20 times for 130 yards and two score. Sam Badalamenti ran 10 times for 25 yards. Brent Morris was the leading receiver with four catches for 41 yards. Macomb Dakota takes on Clinton Township Chippewa Valley in a rematch in Division 1.

Northern Michigan

St. Ignace LaSalle 60 Hillman 19

A 41 point first quarter propelled St. Ignace LaSalle to victory. I can’t find any stats on who did what for St. Ignace. Hillman missed on many opportunities. Quarterback Ty Jones completed eight of his 21 passes for 160 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Mason VanPamel pulled in four of those passes for 121 yards and a score. Leading the rushing attack was Kenny Kolcan with 21 runs for 124 yards and a score. Mike Klein also scored on a 19 yard run in the fourth quarter. St. Ignace LaSalle takes on Johannesberg-Lewiston in Division 8 action.
