MHSAA Football - Week Eight Review

Let’s take a quick review of last week’s action before we head into the final week of the season.

Northernish

Clare 30 Harrison 29

It all came down to a field goal attempt by Harrison. Mads Olsen attempted a 38 yard field goal with only two seconds left on the clock, but it fell inches short. Harrison stormed out to an early lead, with 29 first half points. Clare went away from their normal ground game and won the game on the arm of quarterback Travis Vida. He finished 16 of 29 for 359 yards and four touchdowns. Charlie Bugbee caught five passes for 143 yards and three scores. Joe Huston had five receptions for 142 yards and a score. Ben Bates was Clare’s leading rusher with 10 attempts for 29 yards. For Harrison, quarterback Thomas Nunnally completed two of his six passes for 18 yards and ran 14 times for 152 and two touchdowns. Zach Nowland ran 11 times for 150 yards and a score. Clare won its 32nd consecutive league game and another league title.

West Side

Caledonia 33 Lowell 0

Maybe Coach Dean was onto something. They hadn’t been shut out since 1998. Caledonia quarterback Tanner Christian completed three of his five passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns while also running 10 times for 55 yards and another score. All three of his passes went to Eddie Kelly. Kelly was also the leading running back with 24 carries for 170 yards. On the Lowell side, quarterback Ryan Stevens only completed eight of his 29 passes for 57 yards. Josh Branagan caught three for 32 yards. The rushing attack was led by Max Dean who finished with 68 yards on 18 runs. This was the first victory for Caledonia over Lowell since 1990. It punched their ticket to the playoffs and allows them to clinch a share of the O-K White Conference title if they can beat Grand Rapids Christian on Friday.

Ypsilanti Area

Ypsilanti Lincoln 28 Ypsilanti 27

It was a close game throughout. Both teams let the horses out and rushed for the majority of their offensive output. At halftime, Lincoln was down 27-7 but rallied in the second half. They were able to take the lead with three minutes remaining and make some defensive stops to win. Quarterback Eugene Smith completed five of his 14 passes for 43 yards and two interceptions. BJ Gardner had two receptions for 18 yards. Cam Williams led the way with his 154 yard game on 26 attempts. He found the end zone twice. Devonni Reed also found the end zone twice and finished with 129 yards on 13 runs. For Ypsilanti, quarterback Marquis Smith completed five of his 10 passes for 62 yards and a touchdown while fellow quarterback Jahz Watts completed only one of his five passes for an 18 yard scoring strike. Rajon Williams-Jackson caught three passes for 58 yards and a score. Smith was also the lead the team in rushing with 25 carries for 127 yards and two score.

Capital Area

Fowler 20 Pewamo-Westphalia 13

It was a tough game, but in the end Fowler was able to smash their way to victory. They were led by Austin Cook who ran 34 times for 139 yards and two scores. Quarterback Derek Bengel completed two of his six passes for 29 yards. Dallas Watts caught one pass for 18 yards. In the losing effort, P-W’s Jared Smith rushed 18 times for 140. Trey Bauer rushed nine times for 43 yards and both of the scores.
