MHSAA Football - Week Four Results

It’s hard for me to come to grips with, but the high school football regular season is half way over! The games last week were interesting and had implications on who will win division titles. These are the kind of games that are so much fun to watch. Not only do the high schools typically put a good product on the field, but there is nothing like making a ruckus cheering for your team! Let’s look at last week’s games and see how things shook out.

Great Lakes Bay Region

Millington 27 Frankenmuth 13

After winning 18 straight conference games, Frankenmuth lost to their rival and lost control of the Tri Valley Conference East Division. Now Millington can win the East for the first time since 2011. Millington quarterback Caleb Wascher completed three of his eight passes for 17 yards. Koltyn Sebert caught one pass for a 25 yard touchdown from Austin LeVan and also ran 13 times for 62 yards and another score. Chase Maxon ran 25 times for 147 yards and a score. Frankenmuth just couldn’t get it done on Friday. Quarterback Jack Taggert completed six of his 22 passes for 76 yards, a score, and a pick. The Eagles had to go to the air because they fell behind three scores by the midpoint of the second quarter. Josh Szczepanski caught two passes for 33 yards and a score and ran seven times for 23 yards. Jack Veitengruber rushed eight times for a total of four yards. Taggert rushed six times for 14 yards.

Detroit

Brother Rice 28 Warren De La Salle 21

This one was close! With 5:52 left in the fourth quarter, De La Salle tied up the game at 21. Brother Rice marched down the field and scored on a fourth down and goal to go from the one yard line with a few ticks over two minutes left. De La Salle wasn’t finished though. They moved down the field to the Brother Rice 20 before an incomplete fourth down pass gave the Warriors the ball with 30 seconds left. Brother Rice quarterback Alex Malzone completed 14 of his 20 passes for 201 yards and three scores. Grant Perry pulled in seven of them for 103 yards. John Garry grabbed three passes for 51 yards and two scores. Bobby Dixon III and Brandon Thomas each rushed for 18 yards on seven and four attempts, respectively. For De La Salle, quarterback Joey Barbarino completed 12 of his 23 passes for 177 yards, a score, and a pick while also rushing 154 times for 65 yards. Myles Charley was his favorite receiver with seven receptions for 126 yards and a score. Allen Stritzinger rushed 20 times for 78 yards and two scores.

Upper Peninsula

Menominee 49 Gladstone 6

Sorry guys. The only score/stats/story I could find was behind a pay wall.

West Side

Muskegon 37 East Grand Rapids 7

In the first ever meeting between the two schools, the Big Reds got the upper hand. In terms of total offense, Muskegon held a huge edge 425-151. Muskegon’s quarterback Shawn Pfenning completed 12 of his 18 passes for 141 yards and a score and ran 11 times for 16 yards and two touchdowns. Alezay Coleman caught four of those passes for 62 yards and a score while running once for 14 more. Joeviair Kennedy hauled in two passes for 41 yards and ran once for 11 yards. Caleb Washington ran 16 times for 155 yards. Keonte’ Whiteside only ran twice, but had 89 yards and a score. For East Grand Rapids, quarterback Mikey Roth completed 10 of his 19 passes for 64 yards and the teams only score while also running 11 times for an additional 43 yards. Jon Olsson caught three passes for 30 yards and a score. Bryce Henkey rushed 20 times for 42 yards.
