MHSAA Football - Week Seven Preview
It’s Friday again and that mean HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL! Bust out the coats though because it’s getting colder once the sun goes down. The slate of action this week has gone to places that we haven’t seen much of. We get to Flint as well as some downriver Detroit action. It’s a great day for football so grab the hat and gloves and check out a game. A cheap form of entertainment if you ask me!
Detroit
Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central (6-0) at Riverview (5-1) (Friday October 10, 7pm)
The Falcons of SMCC are having another killer season. They have already locked up a playoff spot last week by winning homecoming over Milan 43-0. That was their third shutout of the season. The Falcons’ Justin Carrabino toted the rock on the first play and went 80 yards for a touchdown. He finished with 14 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns. John Lako added to the rushing attack with 11 carries for 84 yards and a score. Quarterback Bryce Windham only attempted one pass and it fell incomplete. They will be ready to run the ball, that’s for sure. Riverview has been doing well. Other than a slip up against a resurging New Boston in league play, they haven’t lost. Last week they beat up Flat Rock 53-6. Quarterback Drew Kross passed for 128 yards and ran for 95. He accounted for four touchdowns including two with his feet. Running back Eric Gant ran six times for 72 yards and scored twice. This is a very important game for Riverview. With that one loss in league play, they need to hang a “L†on SMCC to even up league win/loss records.
Capital Area
Williamston (6-0) at Lansing Catholic (6-0) (Friday October 10, 7pm)
Williamston is in the playoffs, but it wasn’t an easy path last week. It took an overtime period to get the win. They were able to stuff Portland in overtime and Stone Chase caught the winner on the first play. Quarterback Chaz Moore completed seven of his 11 passes for 121 yards and two picks. His favorite receiver was Montana Reagan who caught three balls for 51 yards. Reagan also gained 33 yards and his three carries. Moore was a dual threat and lead Williamston in rushing with 12 runs for 118 yards and two scores. Stone Chase also carried the ball seven times for 113 yards and two scores. He grabbed two receptions for 27 yards. The winner of this game will take home the Capital Area Activities Conference White Division title. Both Williamston and Lansing Catholic are undefeated and will want that gym banner saying 2014 champions. Lansing Catholic ripped apart the Greyhounds of Eaton Rapids last week 28-0 to keep their dominate season humming along. The defense played lights out; grabbing five interceptions to keep Eaton Rapids out of the end zone.   Three of them were grabbed by Zac Baker. Baker also grabbed three passes for 75 yards and two scores. Quarterback Tony Poljan completed seven of his 18 passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns. He accounted for the other score on a three yard run and gained 72 yards on 19 carries. Tony Palmer led the rushing attack with 18 runs for 103 yards. Lansing Catholic wants to bring back that championship trophy to the school so they will be ready to rock and roll.
Flint Area
Flint Hamady (4-2) at Byron (2-4) (Friday October 10, 7pm)
I realized I hadn’t done a game in Flint this whole season. I chose this one because it’s a pretty important game for Hamady. They are coming off of two straight losses and still have to face New Lothrop next week. A win tonight will set them up for a potential playoff spot. I’ve coached against the staff at Flint Hamady and I’ve coached with them. This crew has been together for a long time and knows how to get the best out of their players, and the kids love them for it. Head coach Gary Lee has had kids flock to him since the crew was at Flint Northern back in the 1990’s. Last week they lost 36-41 at the hands of Burton Bendle. Quarterback Amarr Blake completed 15 of his 29 passes for 398 yards and four touchdowns. Simeon Kemp caught seven passes for 285 yards and four scores. Byron isn’t going to just lie down though. They won their second game of the season last week beating Genesee 28-14. They were led by Brett Grenat who ran 12 times for 143 yards and two scores. Quarterback Hunter Tonti completed 11 of his 22 passes for 123 yards and also ran 13 times for 71 yards and a score. Jack Lawrence caught six passes for 64 yards.   Byron will want to keep their momentum going because if they win out, they have a chance at a playoff spot with a 5-4 record.
Sunset Side
Whitehall (6-0) at Muskegon Oakridge (5-1) (Friday October 10, 7pm)
I’m sure in the town of Whitehall, they are excited to be back in the playoffs for the first time since 2011. They found their way back with a 72-0 win over Hart. Now they have a chance to win their first West Michigan Conference title since 1999.  In the huge win last week, quarterback Zarren Aylor only attempted one pass and it went nine yards for a score to Nolan Throne. Leading the rushing attack was Trip Thommen who ran for 90 yards on five attempts and found the end zone twice. Right behind him was Tyler Carnes with five carries for 86 yards and two scores. Jwan Britton, Connor Rake, and Nolan Throne all found the end zone for touchdowns as well. This is a huge game for Whitehall. They play a tough team in Oakridge for at least a share of the title. Oakridge has made the playoffs 20 of the past 21 seasons. Now they have a huge game on Homecoming to try and win the West Michigan Conference title and make the playoffs. They have seen many huge games and even the young guys on the team got a month with varsity last year in the playoffs. Last week, they got redemption from Shelby’s last second win last year that snatched the WMC crown away. Sophomore quarterback Brady Luttrull played very well. He completed nine of his 14 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target was James Cooper III who caught four passes for 56 yards. Jaegar Beattie caught two for 71 yards and a score. Nate Wahr only caught two passes for 34 yards, but both were touchdowns. Kolin Chahorski carried the ball 20 times for 203 yards and a score while also pulling in one pass for a 13 yard touchdown. This team is dangerous and has plenty of experience in big games. They want to punch their ticket to the playoffs as well.
