Another week in the book and we are running out of the regular season. Teams are starting to play their best football. It’s important to win games right now to get momentum going into the playoffs. So make plans to go to a game this weekend! It’s the best $5 you could spend!

Detroit

Canton 34 Plymouth 23

When a team can hold the ball for 31 of the 48 minutes in a high school football game, you know they are doing well. Canton out rushed Plymouth 327-78 and outgained them in total offensive yards 356-201. The Chiefs of Canton struck first on a 24 yard touchdown run by Weston Price. Plymouth answered with a 98 yard touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. At halftime, the score was still close with Canton holding a six point advantage. Carrying the load for the Chiefs was Charles Turfe. He rushed 25 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Helping out was Westen Price with 13 carries for 73 yards and a score. On the Plymouth side, D.J. Rossell ran 19 times for 84 yards and a score. Matt Busch reeled in three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback A.J. Covertino completed eight of his 10 passes for 123 yards and a TD.

Saginaw

Saginaw Nouvel 28 Traverse City St. Francis 14

This was a close game. At halftime, TCSF led 7-0. In the fourth quarter, they tied it all up at 14 each. Right after they tied it up, Nouvel’s Tyler Hendricks returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Hendricks also came up with an interception. That helped put momentum on Nouvel’s side for the rest of the game. It didn’t help that the Gladiators played without Byron Bullough. Joe Trucco was the leading runner for TCSF, rushing 22 times for 89 yards and a score. He also grabbed one pass for 11 yards. Daniel Gallagher ran 15 times for 76 yards. Adam Armor only ran once, but gained five yards and scored. Quarterback Parker Guss completed two of his eight passes for 25 yards and an interception. On the Nouvel side, quarterback Garrett Graham completed four of his 10 passes for 43 yards and an interception. In his first game back after injury, Ryan Sullivan rushed 19 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns while also grabbing one pass for 17 yards. Austin Hughes ran twice for 18 yards and a score. Ryan Collins was the leading receiver with three receptions for 24 yards.

West Coast

Lowell 53 Caledonia 25

It was Lowell’s homecoming. They also wore grey jerseys to honor active military personnel. The Red Arrows had a pace that Caledonia just couldn’t keep up with, especially after a 17 point first quarter. Caledonia quarterback Kobe Wilson only completed one of his nine pass attempts for 13 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also ran four times for 24 yards. Matt Sarver grabbed that 13 yard touchdown pass. Eddie Kelly was the leading rusher for his squad, racking up 174 yards and two touchdowns on 14 runs. The big player in the game was Lowell quarterback Kyler Shurlow. He completed 13 of his 17 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Bigham was the leading receiver with four receptions for 160 yards and a score. He also tossed a 34 yard touchdown pass. Dylan Brower caught a touchdown (3-107 yards), as did Josh Branagan (2-39 yards), and Josh Bearup (1-34 yards). Shurlow also led the team in rushing attempts. He ran 16 times for 64 yards and three scores. Dylan Brower ran nine times for 42 yards and Kanon Dean rushed eight times for 72 yards.

Upper Peninsula

Ishpeming 28 Neguanee 24

To say these teams are rivals is an understatement. They play each other tough and try to win, but that doesn’t mean they don’t highly respect each other. After the game, when the two coaches met in the press box, the first question out of their mouths was if their opponents came through injury free (they both did.) With the exception of Negaunee tying the game in the second quarter (6-6), Ishpeming had the lead the whole time. Part of that was thanks to Ishpeming quarterback Alex Briones. He rushed for 177 yards on 28 attempts and scored three times. They totaled 333 rushing yards on 52 attempts. For Negaunee, quarterback Ryan Syrjala completed five of his 10 passes for 114 yards and a score while also running 10 times for another 90. Tyler Jandron scored on a 32 yard reception. He also lateraled to Tyler Windahl for a 37 yard touchdown. Windahl also jumped the pile for a one yard score.
