MHSAA Football - Week Six Review

What a great week of football! All these games were very close. Just a play here or there was the difference between thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Let’s take a look at what went down.

Great Lakes Bay Region

Swan Valley 14 Freeland 7

This one was pretty close. Swan Valley chewed up most of the first quarter with a long drive, but Ryan Schauman came up with an interception at the five yard line and returned it to the SV 38. That led to the first score of the game. Swan Valley’s defense had a good night as well, stopping two fourth down conversion attempts in the second hand as well as coming up with a fumble and an interception at the most opportune time. SV quarterback Nick Call completed two of his six passes for 16 yards. Isaiah Berden caught one for seven and Alex Grace caught the other for nine yards. Grace also had plenty of success running the ball. He carried 34 times for 261 yards and both touchdowns. For Freeland, quarterback Jarett Riffel completed five of his 11 passes for 68 yards and a pick but also scored Freeland’s lone touchdown. Tucker LyVere caught three for 32 yards to lead his team in receptions. Jake Jankoska rushed 14 times for 83 yards.

South East Michigan

Clinton 28 Morenci 26

This one came down to the wire. Morenci scored a touchdown in the final minute. Clinton stuffed the two point conversion to come away with the win. Clinton’s Mathew Sexton rushed for 175 yards on 18 carries. Noah Poore carried seven times for 75 yards. For Morenci, Merillat completed two of his eight passes for 40 yards and a pick while also running 17 times for 58 yards. Sandusky carried 15 times for 57 yards.

Up North

Rapid River 20 Cedarville 19

Man, I bet this was an awesome game. Too bad the info is behind the pay wall.

Detroit

Dearborn Heights Robichaud 20 Romulus 14

This was another game that came down to making plays at the end. Romulus’ Oscar Brown has been running all over Robichaud all night. With a fourth and three on the 33 yard line, Robichaud's William Melchor sniffed out the play and rode Brown out of bounds to preserve the victory. Coach Al Demps thinks he has the best young quarterback in the state. That player is 6’2” 185 sophomore dual threat QB Jarius Grissom. Grissom completed seven of his 20 passes for 186 yards. For Romulus, Brown rushed for two scores and 173 yards.
