MHSAA Football Week Two Results

Another exciting week of football has come and gone. The games were great and the weather was nice as well! As the leaves start to turn shades of orange, red, and yellow, football players start turning black and blue. It’s a rough sport and you have to be tough to excel. Some players this week excelled. Others were a bit stuck. Like Coach Dantonio says, keep improving every day, even if it’s only 2% better than the previous day. Let’s get into the results from the games this past Friday.
Grand Rapids
Muskegon Oakridge 41 Montague 14
It was all Oakridge from the get-go. Three touchdowns in the first quarter followed by three touchdowns in the second quarter put the game into a running clock for the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Montague came alive and scored twice. Oakridge quarterback Austin Wright had a huge night. He completed four of his eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns while running four times for another 82 yards and a score. When he was on defense, he scooped up a fumble and rumbled 62 yards to pay dirt. Jerick Wambaugh caught two passes for 38 yards, but was not the leading receiver. Dom Greenawalt caught one for a 47 yard touchdown and Alex Torrenga caught one for a 41 yard touchdown. Dan Shoop was the leading running back with 12 carries for 70 yards and two scores. On the Montague side, Jacob Buchberger and Chris Carroll shared duty at quarterback. Buchberger completed five of his 17 passes for 50 yards and a pick while Carroll completed five of his 14 passes for 115 yards and a score. Alex VanVleet caught six of the passes for 113 yards and a score. Carroll also rushed 12 times for 47 yards and a score.
UP/Northern Michigan
Sault Ste. Marie 21 Alpena 14
This one was close. Alpena took the lead 14-7 with 9:50 left in the game. Sault Ste. Marie scored twice in the final 5:11 to win the game. Sault quarterback Michael James had a nice game. He completed four of his seven passes for 95 yards and gained 102 on his 17 carries and scored once. James also intercepted three passes. For Alpena, quarterback Tyler Pintar, other than the interceptions it was a nice game. He completed 17 of his 32 passes for 171 yards and carried the ball 11 times for another 50. Tim Atkinson caught a slant pass and raced 17 yards for a score and finished with five receptions for 39 yards. Leading the rushing attack for Alpena was Jordan Ferguson. He gained 63 yards on 13 carries and returned a kickoff 50 yards. Dylan Hoes also had five receptions for 80 yards and a score.

Edwardsburg 44 Vicksburg 7
This game was close at the half. Edwardsburg led 13-0. Then Vicksburg scored to make it 13-7. After that, the Eddies scored 31 consecutive points to turn a close game into a blowout. Their quarterback, Brett Bowman, completed three of his seven passes for 34 yards and two interceptions. Garrett Bronkema caught all three of the passes. Jack Bywaters led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 128 yards and a score. Also scoring rushing touchdowns were Dylan Hulett (13 for 81 yards and a score), Quinton McCollough (six runs for 78 yards and two scores), Dante Razzano (four runs for 26 yards and a score), and Dustin Vires (three runs for three yards and a score.) For Vicksburg, quarterback Dalton Ketelaar completed eight of his 18 passes for 129 yards as well as running three times for four yards and the lone score. Chad Hettinger caught five of those for 71 yards. Nick Wallace led the rushing attack with 13 runs for 36 yards.
Capital Area
Mason 36 Eaton Rapids 0
According to Eaton Rapids head coach Mike Smith, everything that could go wrong for the greyhounds, went wrong. Mason was bigger and dominated the line of scrimmage. Mason coach Jerry VanHavel gave Eaton Rapids some credit though. He said the ER kids played hard, but they physically outmanned them. Mason’s Hunter Holbrook scored four touchdowns on runs of 56, two, two, and three yards. Marshal Hyden had an interception in the end zone to stop an Eaton Rapids drive. He also grabbed a pass and went 55 yards for a score. Sorry, couldn’t find any stats for Eaton Rapids.
