MHSAA Week One Results

Week One is in the books! Everyone has had a chance to play a game, look for ways to improve, and game plan for the next opponent. But before we can get into Week Two, we have to take a look back at the first week.

Detroit Area

Clarkston 24 Macomb Dakota 21

It was a good first half for Clarkston. They had two 80 yard drives in the first half to jump out to a 17-0 halftime lead. Dakota wasn’t going down easy though. The Cougars made a game when they pulled within three points late in the game. An onside kick recovered by Clarkston finished up Dakota. Clarkston starting quarterback DJ Zezula completed eight of his 14 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown while also running for 100 yards and another score. On the Dakota side, quarterback Maurice Moon completed 16 of his 26 passes for 143 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.

Great Lakes Bay Region

Swan Valley 42 Nouvel 0

I thought I was picking a good game. Little did I know that it would only be good for one side and Nouvel would get to see the other side of a running clock. Swan Valley came out on fire and lit up the scoreboard. Just before halftime, it was 13-0 with just about two and a half minutes to go. Bang bang, its 28-0 going into the break. Star of the show was Western commit Alex Grace. He ran 16 times for 195 yards and four scores. He also caught a 47 yard pass and completed two of his three pass attempts for 41 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Berden caught seven passes for 82 yards and a score. For Nouvel, quarterback Mitch Morley completed nine of his 18 passes for 103 yards and three interceptions. Jason Russell hauled in six of those passes for 64 yards. Cameron Fluder was the Panther’s leading rusher with seven attempts for 27 yards.

West Coast

Zeeland West 47 Detroit Country Day 20

The Wing T offense was clicking for Zeeland West against the Yellowjackets. They scored six times and had ten different players run with the ball. Darius Perisee, Even MacDonald, Vihn Doan, Nick Jasch, Dakota Gurink, Travis Ensing, Riley Brinks, Nate Forward, Shane DeJonge, and Casey Brinks all carried the rock. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the Zeeland West stat computer and no stats can be found. Detroit Country Day couldn’t get things going on par with Zeeland West. They got on the scoreboard by way of a flea flicker between quarterback David Pohl and receiver Matt Maclean. Jacob Hill and Joe Bergin both scored in the fourth quarter to make the final score more respectable.

Mid-Michigan

Ithaca 38 Clare 13

There wasn’t much of a drop off with new quarterback Jacob Smith. He completed 17 of his 24 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran ten times for 46 more yards to lead his team in rushing. Spence Demull was his favorite target with ten catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Grant Gimmey (4-30, one TD) helped out in the passing game as well. For Clare, it was not the way they wanted to start the season. Quarterback Travis Vida completed seven of his 15 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball twice. Ryan Seiter rushed eight times for 11 yards. Will Boberg caught three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown while teammate Joe Huston caught four passes for 93 yards and a score.
