For the third time since May of this year, former MSU & NBA player Keith Appling has been arrested. For the third time a firearm was involved. The young man played at MSU from 2010-2014 and last year in the NBA for the Orlando Magic.

Keith Appling is 24 and was arrested Sunday evening at approximately 9PM in Detroit. The alleged crime occurred while he was driving away from a traffic stop. He stopped and then was pursued for a short amount of time, before stopping again.

He was driving a 2013 Dodge Challenger and was observed by officers who allegedly saw him commit a traffic violation in Michigan’s largest city. Police then became aware of the odor of marijuana emanating from the Challenger.

Astonishingly when a member of law enforcement went to retrieve Appling's driver's license, Appling then rolled up his window and drove away per the police. Members of law enforcement did catch up to Appling after a short distance and detained him.

Police were cognizant that a designer bag that had been sitting on the rear seat was now no longer visible in the vehicle. Upon investigating the whereabouts of the bag, law enforcement found the bag on the side of the road with a loaded Berretta. In addition to finding the gun and the bag they also found paperwork with Appling's name.

Appling has had two other incidents with law enforcement this summer as mentioned earlier. Both of those incidents are pending presently in Wayne County Circuit Court. They are:

  1. May 2016 He had an incident at a Detroit strip club on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a loaded firearm and marijuana.
  2. June 2016 Again Appling was in the back seat of a vehicle. Obviously that in and of itself is not a crime. However during the traffic stop there was a Smith and Wesson .40-caliber handgun on the floor allegedly
