MSU Football Recruiting Right On Track
Michigan State football recruiting is right on track. Coach Dantonio placed a big emphasis on instate and Ohio recruiting and it appears to be paying off. The recruiting gurus are gushing over MSU’s current commitment list that includes half of Michigan high school’s top ten and a key Ohio commitment.
MSU currently has commitments from Michigan’s top linebacker (Norman), top two running backs (Baker, Caper), one of the top OL / DL (Treadwell), the top QB (Maxwell) and arguably the top receiver (Spencer). MSU is just getting started in the Buckeye state as Dantonio and company will look to take multiple prospects from Ohio this year, like every year.
The bumper crop of lineman in Ohio has the MSU coaching staff excited about summer football camps. They will look very closely at the lineman on their wish list and make a closer determination as to who should be at the top of the Spartan board. Mark Dantonio’s first recruiting class fell a bit short on OL numbers. With Arthur Ray still recovering and Chase Dumphord having defected, Michigan State will need to take at least four quality OL’s this year. MSU took five OL’s this last year, but will still look to bolster the numbers at this position.
Expect MSU to take more than one TE prospect in this class. They will likely look at kids that have potential to slide into other positions. There are a number of Michigan and Ohio kids that have big frames, athletic bodies, good hands and decent feet. These guys will inevitably find out where they stand as camping season gets underway. Dion Sims of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s is high on the MSU wish list. Sims has both the athleticism and size to be a mismatch for opposing defenses. Some recruiting services see him as a big receiver. It is generally thought that Sims will play TE in the collegiate ranks if he doesn’t choose basketball as his primary sport. He could become the next Matt Trannon type to wear a green jersey.
