Brady Hoke took the podium at the Big Ten media days for the first time since being named the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines.  Here are the highlights from his press conference:

ON THE STATE OF HIS TEAM:

“We’re a long way from where we need to be.”

“This fall camp is as important to us as anybody.”

“The toughness you need to play this game will say a lot about what we need to be as a football team”

ON THE RIVALRY WITH OHIO STATE:

“It’s never been about who the coach is, it’s about those two great institutions”

“If you can’t get geared up for that game, you may not be human.”

ON DENARD ROBINSON:

“He’s done a tremendous job. He ran the same offense in high school and that’s a plus.”

“We’re smart enough to have elements of what he did well in the spread into our offense.”

ON WHAT IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

“This job is about the 115 kids on my team. If we ever don’t think about those kids then we aren’t doing our job.”

ON CHANGING HIS OFFENSE:

“When your defense plays against a pro-style offense all spring long, and all fall camp, you build a toughness edge.”

“This is a physical league.”

“We think we can play better defense based on how we play on offense.”

ON REBUILDING:

“I don’t think we’re rebuilding. Period. We’re Michigan, and we have kids that understand that they’re Michigan. So I don’t put any stock into that.”

ON MICHIGAN'S WIDE RECEIVERS:

“One of the best things we have at that position is a lot of competition. That’s why I think fall camp will be especially important for us.”

ON MICHIGAN'S EARLY RECRUITING SUCCESS:

“This might sound arrogant, and if it is, it is. We’re Michigan”
