• The NFL is not known for Big Trades. I did hear an inkling of one weeks ago while a guest in a chat for NFL Sirius Heads. I just heard more about it this morning. The Packers have at least looked at (that gives them deniability) for Browns OT Joe Thomas. He played for the Badgers and is one of the best young OTs in football. I am hearing that their interest is getting even more intense. I am not saying anything is imminent, but I am saying there is smoke and possibly some fire.
• Any more proof you need that Jim Zorn won’t be back was recently documented by USA Today. The article is linked on the Phalanx Forum, but Owner Snyder has already approached and been told no thanks TWICE by Mike Shanahan. Thanks Jim, please tip your waitress as you walk out the door.
• Chiefs fans should at least smile with some very slim glimpses. At least you know where you are headed.
• Any team wanting to make a mid season change, something that just doesn’t happen in the NFL, is also hindered by the Rooney rule.
• One NFL executive told me Monday morning that a Cowher return to coaching and it being in Carolina is, “Certain.”
• For a team in chaos in the off-season how about the Broncos? Josh McDaniels stock as a genius in training like his mentor Bill Belichick is rising as Kyle Orton continues to play Trent Dilferesque and win games.
• Hey Mike Crabtree how did that holdout work out? Oh I forgot, same money for six, instead of five years. Brilliant.
• Could we be heading towards Manning vs. Manning in the Super Bowl? I think the Giants are destined for there with an NFC championship with a HEALTHY Brett Favre. Who else in the AFC really sticks out other than Indy? They all have their warts and granted it is only early in the second quarter of the season, but from this vantage, who else really says tell everyone about me other than Indy in the AFC?
• Mike Zimmer the Cincinnati DC lost his wife last week. Super lady with three great kids. Zimmer is very well respected and loved, and one Bengal told me, “I have never been shaken up like that in my life. People talk about football being emotional and it is, but that was a new experience. We had to win that game. We knew that we would.” I guess if you step back, how can winning a game being a balm for the loss of your wife, but isn’t that why people love the game of football? It means so much, even if it is just to take away the sting that life can bring.
• Dick Jauron and Norv Turner are also on their way out the door. The NFL loves to recycle guys who have failed and I guess I get that. Belichick is a much better coach the second time around. What I don’t get is some guys getting a third and more tries. I would love to see the NFL open up the fraternity and give some long time or some young but proven guys some more shots.
• The Schwartz is getting a lot of credit for his guys fighting hard in Detroit. I said before the season that he is another good guy, yet again, is a bad organization. This is his first stop as a head coach and I really hope he gets a turn with a real team. He could be very special.
• Is JaMarcus Russell the next Ryan Leaf? He has been terrible and with the Raiders trying to get anyone to trade for anyone on their roster would anyone bite? Of course not, he is owed too much money. That means they will have to cut him, or have him sit on the bench and collect his weekly check. Can anyone see them playing him knowing that he stinks? One NFL player told me Monday morning, “They haven’t got rid of him and went after Garcia yet so, yes.”
• Is anyone shocked that T.O. is on another team self-destructing? He is act went cold quicker there than anywhere.
• Call me an idiot, (it wouldn’t be the first time) I liked the Broncos throw back uniforms on Sunday. So many times today’s uniforms are Madison Avenue and that was just a good old throwback.
