Prep Basketball Report Feb 9 - 16
It’s amazing to me. We are already past Valentines Day, (or, as I like to call it, VD…other people call it Singles Awareness Day) and moving quickly toward the next phase of high school hoops, district action. That begins two weeks from this upcoming Monday. Heck, they will be playing for state titles at the Breslin on March 26th! There was some good action over the past seven days. The battles are starting to play themselves out for conference titles for some and bragging rights for others. There isn’t much time left in the season so teams are making preparations so that they aren’t pulling out the baseball bats and track spikes early in March. Let’s take a look at the games this past week.
High Score of the Week
Detroit Northwestern 94 Detroit Central 76 (170 points)
It’s nice to see two Detroit teams in here that aren’t a charter school or getting blown out. In the winning effort, Ernie Bradley scored 13 points and pulled down 15 boards. He wasn’t the high scorer though. Brandon Moses scored 18 points. Devon Johnson chipped in 16 for the 7-9 Northwestern team. Jayln Massenburg scored 26 points in the losing effort. Davon Palmer scored 13.
Low Score of the Week
Zeeland East 27 Hudsonville Unity Christian 26 (53 points)
It was about a month ago that ZE beat HUC by nailing a last second shot. This time, it was Hudsonville trying to make that shot, but it wouldn’t fall. It wasn’t a pretty game for the Chix; they shot 34% (10 of 29) and only connected on five of nine free throws. Leading the charge for Zeeland East was Nate Poll, who scored seven points. Travis Vegter led all scorers with 13 points in the losing effort.
Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week
Ann Arbor Huron 92 Monroe 41 (51 points)
If you listen to Hondo and I on the radio, we always come to the same conclusion in regards to blowout victories; if you pull your starters and the backups are doing this…we don’t have as much of a problem with it. It’s when you rub it in their faces that we take issue. The starting five for Ann Arbor Huron only played six minutes to open the game. It got nasty in the second quarter, with the bench players outscoring Monroe 34-5 to take a 67-23 halftime lead. Mike Lewis led the scoring charge with 14 points. Jeff Hugan and Cameron Haywood each chipped in 12. The lead scorer for Monroe was Todd Roberts with 11 points.
Future Spartan Watch
This week, we will update you on two players who were previously profiled. The first is Brandon Kearney, who was profiled last week. He scored 22 points in the playoff game against Detroit Crockett to win the game 74-48. Although Detroit Martin Luther King took them to overtime earlier this week, the top seed for the PSL East Division took home the win and will play Detroit Cody in the PSL finals. Kearney scored 11.
Suttons Bay player Dwaun Anderson had a fantastic game last week. He scored 25 for the Noresmen who beat Glenn Lake 61-41. In addition to the scoring, he also pulled down 11 rebounds and tossed eight assists. Pretty good night for the future Spartan!
