â€¦ Right Winger Assigned to Grand Rapids For Conditioning â€¦
Detroit, MIâ€¦Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced the club has signed right wing Darren McCarty to a one-year contract.Â In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the deal were not available.Â McCarty has been assigned to Grand Rapids on a 14-day conditioning loan.
â€œDarren has earned this opportunity,â€ said Holland.Â â€œHeâ€™s made great strides in the past several months and we wanted to give him the chance to continue in hopes he can contribute to the Red Wings once again.â€
McCarty began his return to the NHL by signing with the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League on Jan. 8, 2008.Â He played six games with the Generals tallying three goals and three assist for six points along with 30 penalty minutes.Â McCarty moved up to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Wings primary American Hockey League affiliate, on February 1st where he has tallied seven points (4-3--7) and 19 PIM in nine games.
McCartyâ€™s last NHL game was April 8, 2007 â€“ the final game of the regular season for the Calgary Flames.Â Prior to that contest, McCarty missed over three months with a back injury.Â He spent two seasons with the Flames, appearing in 99 games for Calgary.
McCarty began his NHL career when he was drafted by Detroit in the second round (46th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.Â He played 11 seasons for the Wings, helping the team capture three Stanley Cup Championships (1997, 1998 & 2002).
