It’s about over. Another game or two and we’ll be ready to kick off boys districts. Monday night the action will begin and sprint right through the finals at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center on the campus of our own Spartan Nation. The girls are running their tournament a week ahead of the boys. They will finish up March 6-8 at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti. That’s the same weekend as the Nike Coach of the Year football clinic in Mount Pleasant. It’s a great place for high school (and small college) coaches to come together and learn about football. Oh yea, I’m supposed to be talking basketball. Let’s get into that part.

Regis Ward dropped 24 while his Pershing teammate, Keith Appling dropped 22. 200 points has got to be the highest point total for the season.

Flint Hamady 98 – Genesee 39

Four players for Hamady scored in double figures. Brian Echols has six steals to go along with 24 point, including four from three point land. The score was 57-27 at the half and it didn’t get better from there. In the fourth quarter, Genesee only scored four points. Leading the Hawks in rebounds was Reynold Swilley with seven.

League Titles

Livonia Clarenceville won the Metro Conference with their win over Macomb Lutheran North. They lead 17-2 after the first quarter and kept on rolling through their 67-41 victory. It helped that Macomb was 0-13 from the floor in the first quarter and 3-15 in the third. Senior Lonnie Fairfax has 18 points, six assists, and seven rebounds for Clarenceville. An 11-0 run to being the second half gave Clarenceville the momentum to finish off Macomb Lutheran North.

The Detroit Catholic League crown was won by Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. They defeated Dearborn Divine Child 45-41. The game was close into the fourth quarter and a three point shot by Davide Curletti tied the score at 41 and scored the next four points as OLSM put the game away. This was the third straight year that they won the Catholic League A-B crown. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard won the C-D Division with a win over Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 60-49. It was also their third straight title. Eso Akunne had 23 points and 14 rebounds for Ann Arbor Gabriel.

Saginaw High wrapped up their fourth consecutive year with at least a share of the Saginaw Valley League crown. They won it with a victory over Flint Southwestern Academy. Southwestern is slightly down this season after losing their best player and their coach this past off-season. Saginaw High can win it outright with a win over Bay City Western on Thursday. They won’t have much time to rest though, their first district game will be played against (also played at) Saginaw Arthur Hill; the third ranked team in the state. The winner of that game will have the inside track to win the city of Saginaw’s third state title in three years.
