Results from Week One of High School Football
The fourth quarter has run out on Week One and it’s time to check the scoreboard. Mid Michigan, like many other areas around this great state, had some weather related stoppages. There were two in our freshmen game and we were only able to play a half. We won and the win improved my all time assistant coaching record to 1-9 in two seasons. I will say it felt great to get my first win since I was a player in 1996. Now that I have had a chance to puff my chest out for a minute, let’s get into the results of Week One games.
Detroit Area
Novi Detroit Catholic Central 24 – Detroit Southeastern 12
Coach Mach got his 274th win by playing some smash mouth football. Only one pass was attempted by CC and that was on a two-point conversion. Catholic Central was up 18-0 with 1:31 left in the third before Michigan State commit Charles Burrell threw a 17 yard TD and ran a quarterback sneak for another. That is as close as Southeastern got though. Burrell was 14-30 for 176 yards and a touchdown though the air, while going 71 yards on 18 carries and another TD. Not bad stats for a game played in heavy rain a times. I wasn’t at the game, but after reading multiple accounts, I didn’t see anything about the other Michigan State commit, Fred Smith. Southeastern travels to take on Detroit Mumford this week while CC plays at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.
Mid Michigan
Mount Pleasant 43 – Midland 23
Ouch! Mount Pleasant was attacking the end zone from their first possession. William Arnold connected with wide receiver Tyler Mills for a 69 yard touchdown on the third play of the game. They also connected for touchdowns of 77 and 37 yards. It was a close game at the half, 15-14 Midland, but Mount Pleasant rattled off 22 third quarter points and by the middle of the fourth, the game was on ice and the Mount Pleasant backup QB was scoring as well. It won’t get any easier for Midland, as they play Bay City Central and Saginaw Heritage in the next two weeks. Mount Pleasant takes on an improved Saginaw High squad.
West Coast
Lowell 7 – Davison 0
This game was a defensive struggle. Lowell had a lot of underclassmen playing on their defense, but still got it done. A 35 yard touchdown pass was the difference in this game. Davison is a tough team and suffered a tough loss. This is quite a drop off for Davison, who averaged 50 points per game last season. I fully expect them to rebound and make a run in the playoffs. Lowell proved to be an aggressive, hard hitting squad even without all-state QB Keith Nichols, who’s moved on to Oklahoma. Torsten Boss accounted for almost all of Lowell’s offense. There were only 5 plays in which he did not run the ball or pass it. Boss had 24 carries for 91 yards and 138 yards through the air. Lowell travels to Hudsonville while Davison hosts Rockford. These are tough games for each team.
Northern
Suttons Bay 38 – Traverse City St. Francis 20
I’m not sure what to think about this game. All I’d heard was how St. Francis was going to win and how great they were. This was from some of their fans on a forum, though. I’m not ready to call them bad, but it’s not a good start. On the other hand, Suttons Bay was supposed to be having a down season after losing a lot to graduation. Seems funny how the roles were reversed. SB had 471 yards of total offense (356 of which were on the ground) not including two long touchdowns that were called back. One of the keys to this game was Suttons Bay splitting out two receivers, forcing TCSF to move defensive backs out to cover them. This put TCSF’s defensive backs out of position to help on running plays. It also didn’t help that St. Francis had four turnovers. Turnovers are killers! The blocking of the offensive line for the Suttons Bay Norsemen was fantastic. No team will rack up that many yards without an offensive line playing at an extremely high level. Suttons Bay travels to Harbor Springs while St. Francis goes to Saginaw to play Nouvel.
