Spartan Nation 2009 Scouting Report: Wisconsin Badgers

Biggest Game: October 3 at Minnesota and November 21 at Northwestern

Predicted record: 8-4 (4-4)

Projected Big Ten standing: 6th

Returning Starters: 11 OFFENSE: 6 DEFENSE: 5 Lettermen returning: 42

Head Coach: Bret Bielema 4th Season at Wisconsin Last Season: 7-6 Lifetime: 28-11

Top assistant: OC Paul Chryst

Number of Players on the All Spartan Nation Big Ten Team: Two TE Garrett Graham and OT Gabe Carimi

Analysis: The Badgers underachieved last year with seven wins. Bielema is a good young coach who had some growing pain mistakes. Some of the Badger faithful forget that it was only his 3rd season as a head coach, but that still was acceptable.

The Badgers will again attack and try to play the toughness card. Although they lost half of their starters, I expect them to better. They will have inexperience at the QB, but with some very good WRs and the leagues best TE and as always a good OL and rushing attack he should be fine.

I picked two key games as their biggest game of the season. Yes I realize that biggest is singular, but the Badgers always seem to lose a game on the road that just doesn’t make sense. Last year Coach Bielema’s team was ahead of MSU in the fourth quarter, but he lost his composure and got a personal foul and called a poor timeout as Brett Swenson kicked the game winning field goal. There always seems to be a loss like that each year going back to Alvarez.

Both of those, “Biggest” games are on the road and are games that the Badgers should win. I marked them both as losses based on the Badgers track record. If they should win them both, that would move them to a ten-win season and this could be special. I highly doubt it, but an eight-win season is nothing to complain about.
