The Hawkeyes have the most under-appreciated coach in the nation. He is worth every dime he earns, and he is not a good coach, he is a great coach. No one, NO ONE, in college football gets more out of less than Ferentz.

His teams are always well coached and always play well. On offense and defense, he doesn’t do tricks. You know what Iowa does. It is simply a question of whether or not you can stop them.

Once again, the Hawkeyes will have a tough team that comes ready for a street fight every week. They aren’t flashy. They don’t get the athletes at Iowa that a USC or a Florida does, but what they do get is a tough between the tackles team that is more than willing to run and punt and wait for you to make a mistake.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but let me give you an example of how Ferentz and his staff prepare. My wife and I were having dinner with a division one head coach that we are close with. He mentioned how he had been told that the Spartan DL had a tendency not to get their hands up in the air to block passes at the line of scrimmage. A member of the Iowa coaching staff told him this.

When the Spartans played their best game of the season against the Hawks last season they came down the field for their game winning drive. At the MSU goal line I turned to the person with me and said, “They will run a slant and try to exploit the DL.” Well, I looked smarter than I am because that is what the Hawks did and they won the game. When you watch the film the DL had their hands down on a pass they could have easily deflected and they lost.

I am not trying to take MSU DL Ted Gill to task again on this issue. I already have. I am trying to say that the Hawks watch every detail and are tacticians. They have their players ready and if they didn’t have the boys from Columbus on the schedule like MSU they could have had a shot at the Big Ten title.
