Steroids Ruin America’s Favorite Pastime
Last week, it was rumored that Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees failed an amphetamines test. This is the most recent rumor surrounding players using steroids or amphetamines. An agreement was reached between the players and the managers before the 2006 season to ban amphetamines, in addition to steroids. Steroids were not banned until late 2002. If a player were to test positive, the player would have to go to counseling and take up to six additional tests over the next year. If a player tests positive a second time, they are suspended for 25 games.
Baseball is a game that requires skills but should also be about having fun. It should be man versus man, not man versus a man who is jacked up on steroids. Does that seem fair at all. The players who hit home runs should be praised because they have the strength and the ability to hit the ball using just a bat and their muscles that were not enhanced through drugs. Steroids give players an unfair advantage to those who are smart and want to keep their bodies healthy. Not only will steroids harm you, but they have an emotional and psychological effects on you too.
Baseball players, along with many other athletes, are role models for the younger generations. When I was younger, I loved playing baseball. Now I know that I would never get to play baseball because I’m a girl but that didn’t stop me from trying to want to hit like them. One thing that athletes have to remember is that children do look up to them and they have to set an example for what’s right. If kids hear about their favorite athlete using steroids and that’s the reason why they can hit the ball as hard as they do, then the kid thinks it’s ok since all he wants to do is be able to hit the ball as hard as his role model.
Steroids and other illegal drugs that help enhance the performance of athletes should be wiped out completely and we should go back to the way the game was before they were involved. America’s favorite pastime, the game of baseball, has taken a hit since all of the steroid allegations and investigations have started. I know that ratings haven’t dropped and ticket sales haven’t gone down and that doesn’t surprise me. I just think that baseball players, and even all the athletes need to remember that because they are as popular as they are, people watch them and want to be like them. Don’t let steroids ruin America’s favorite pastime. Keep the game man versus man and just keep the game the way it was meant to be played.
