TIGERS SELECT RIGHTHANDED PITCHER RYAN PERRY

Arizona Pitcher is Detroit’s Top Pick in First-Year Player Draft
Â
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today selected righthanded pitcher Ryan Perry from the University of Arizona with their first pick (21st overall) in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. It marked the fifth time in the last six years the Tigers selected a pitcher in the first round of the draft.
Â
Perry has appeared in 29 games (six starts) with Arizona in 2008, compiling a 6-3 record, 3.07 ERA (70.1IP/24ER), one save and 69 strikeouts. He has limited the opposition to a .218 batting average (57x261) this season.
Â
“The Tigers organization is pleased to select Ryan Perry today,” Tigers Vice President, Amateur Scouting David Chadd said. “We look forward to adding a pitcher of Ryan’s caliber and potential to our system.”
Â
A 6-4, 200-pound righthander, Perry earned all-star honors with Orleans in the Cape Cod League during the summer of 2007. He posted a 1-2 record, 4.15 ERA (21.2IP/10ER) and 30 strikeouts in 18 appearances. Perry was tabbed the ninth-best prospect in the Cape Cod League by Baseball America.
