Transcript of Hondo's exclusive interview with the Spartan Nation's own, and new Lions QB Drew Stanton from Lions OTA!
Hondo: First of all Drew, just talk about it now, have you pinched yourself yet? I mean, has reality hit...I'm in the NFL now?
Drew: Yea, it's pretty crazy. But, I think when I first got out here you have to put that aside and get to work because this game is a lot faster and getting adjusted to that is hard enough in itself.
Hondo: How different is it? I mean, in college you get to see a guy make his break and throw the ball. Here, they're screaming at you, "throw the ball" before he ever makes his break.
Drew: Definitely. I think that's a trademark of this offense is trusting guys. Our philosophy is that our receiver’s gonna win 1 on 1 and we have to put the ball in a spot in order to give him a chance, and it's a lot different because it's before you see a guy break, Like you said, even a second before, as the ball has gotta be gone. It's a matter of trust and it's really important within this offense.
Hondo: How's it for you? I mean, Martz has re-done your grip, your throwing style, your angle, your hips, your feet. How is that going? They are re-making you. Stanton-zilla.
Drew: You know, it's good. Like you were saying before, you kind of have to break everything down and start back over before you can get better. I feel like every day I go out there and try to focus on one or two things and once I get that down try and progress it and focus more on what I can work on next because there's a lot. But I'm getting that understanding and also getting the chance to sit back and see Kitna operate within the offense is really fortunate. And same with Dan. They both have a good understanding and have been very helpful and beneficial to kind of reach out to me and the other quarterback that's here and guide us a little bit and tell us little things that can help us with the offense.
Hondo: It's been a long time since you've been able to sit back and maybe learn. How refreshing is it? Because stepping in, you can only imagine if you went some place where you had to be the immediate starter. How beneficial is it to have Kitna?
Drew: It's huge. I think to get a chance to be around him on and off the field is going to be very beneficial to me because he is a guy who has established himself in this league. Just setting in to see the little things that he coaches on. Every day I come out here and learn so many different things from him because he knows where you can cut corners or cut edges, to quicken up your drop here, lengthen your drop to buy time, all those things. I think it's really important to talk to different guys of how you come into the league. It can be very beneficial to you to come in here and just learn and to get an understanding of what is going on, especially within this system. And then when you get your opportunity, make the most of it whenever it comes.
