Oof! Now I remember why I stopped doing those March Madness brackets! Typically, I’m out of contention by the end of the first weekend of March Madness because I always pick the wrong teams. I suck at gambling. I’ve learned that and applied it to my life. Now when I go to the casino, I always win. Typically, I’m at the bar, putting my money down on an adult beverage and I always win. My luck was not on this past weekend in regards to picking who would win the game. I’m going to stick to previewing and not picking winners. (1-3, the only win was Menominee over Homestead, WI)

North

Menominee 42 – Mequon Homestead (WI) 28

Two weeks into the season, Menominee has beaten two Wisconsin state football champs. This time it was Division 1 Mequon Homestead. Maroons coach Ken Hofer said this of the win, “This is probably one of the biggest wins in the Maroon history.” Menominee was down 28-18 before digging deep and pulling out a huge upset. Quarterback Ethan Shaver said, “This is better than the state championship because it's here.”

Rochester Adams 33 – Farmington Hills Harrison 14

Adams played up how big the game was all week during practice and it showed on the field. Josh Renel returned a punt for a touchdown, the first time it’s happened in school history. Renel also scored on a two yard touchdown run and an 11 yard touchdown reception. Even though Rochester Adams turned the ball over five times, they still were able to come out on top.

West

Stevensville Lakeshore 28 – Jackson Lumen Christi 21

After defeating the Lancers four times in a row, Jackson fell victim to mistakes and mental errors. Both sides had their fair share of penalties, with 21 flags thrown for just over 100 yards. Jackson was up at half time, but let the game slip away in the second half. They even had a chance to tie the game and force overtime with less than a minute left in the game, but couldn’t get the ball into the end zone.

Mid Michigan

Alma 41 – Bullock Creek 20

I thought this game would be much closer. Bullock Creek protected itself against the deep ball by defending the four wide receivers, but in doing so left themselves vulnerable to the inside running game. BC had far too many turnovers against a great team and that’s the real story of the game. They needed to play virtually mistake free but couldn’t get it done. Alma racked up 472 yards of total offense to Bullock Creek’s 341.
