What's wrong with the Spartan Nation?

What is up with the Spartan inferiority complex?

Â
I hate to say it but I get so much email from people who are Spartan fans that ask me “Why would that recruit come here, were MSU?” I got one this morning from a person here in Michigan that said “I can’t blame ROJO for picking Florida, look at the weather here. I guess if he wanted to stay home he would go to UM. I am telling you Hondo, he won’t come here.”

Â
Why the inferiority complex? I gave you all multiple comments from well-respected coaches around the nation that had awesome thoughts about MSU during the coaching search? Why is it that expecting good things is so hard? Are you really telling me that a recruit would only pick a school on weather? Mateen Cleaves and Antonio Smith chose MSU because Izzo sold them something. He sold them what MSU had accomplished and what he wanted to accomplish. They were two kids that could have gone to warmer climates, or UM, but chose to be Spartans. Dantonio is doing the same.

Â
MSU people constantly sell this great University and place to live short. I am fortunate in that I have traveled the nation and seen athletic facilities and sites. I am sorry but there are a few schools with better facilities but we are not behind by any stretch of the imagination, and we have a major upgrade coming to the Duffy.

Â
Why is it that the Spartan Nation struggles with this lack of confidence? I am so sick of people when they find out who we are recruiting against telling me why a kid won’t come here! The last football coaching staff relegated us to a role as stepsister because they refused to recruit against anyone of substance. One Big Ten coach told me “even if we aren’t really on a kid, we may send a letter or talk to him, that will get MSU off of him right away.” The sad part is that some of the fans feel the same.

Â
Has our football program outright sucked lately? No question: YES. That said this is still MSU and we have a staff that understands what that value means now. This class may not be a national top 20 and probably won’t make the top 5 in the Big Ten. The next class will have the benefit of a full year of being recruited by Dantonio and with all of the high rated kids that even had us in the picture this season that should tell you something.   I can tell you that the kids he has gotten fit a mold, a mold that will work with Dantonio and what he wants.

Â
The days of the coaches backing off because the rodents want a kid, or Notre Dame are done. MSU has a swagger back. We haven’t been to a bowl and we got a long way to go, but they got something to sell. It is that a young kid can come here and restore a great school back to prominence. I am sorry but not all of today’s young people are selfish jerks. Many of them want to believe in something. I hear the stories and have related some to you about how Narduzzi, Dantonio and this new class of coaches are going after kids and challenging them. I love that.

Â
Last night on my news cast Coach Dantonio told me “Hondo when you look at what Pete did with a down USC program when he arrived, and Nick with a bad LSU program and what Coach Tressel did at OSU after 30 plus years without a championship, I believe we will do it here.” I get the frustration people. I know the jokes from neighbors and families you already hate that are UM fans suck. Heck, I end the news each night with how many days until the MSU vs. UM game. You can imagine the grief I get.

Â
All of that said this is a great school with a tradition that is second to none. We have had 40 years of wondering in the desert, but even Moses made the Promised Land.Â

Â
Who knows what ROJO decides, this is bigger then him. This is about MSU and legacy that was passed down throughout generations. I love my dad but I am sick of hearing about the national championships of yester years. I want my own. These coaches are not going to rush and give kids scholarships that won’t play, or have marginal character issues. Do we need numbers? Sure we do. They also know that they will be able to sell when they have more time and why take a chance on a kid that will be gone.

Â
Am I the only person who has humiliated by Herbstreit went into a diatribe about how MSU “has” to take those questionable kids? No, it was a great topic of discussion. They are not going to offer a kid that can’t play, and they are not going to offer a kid that will embarrass the program or harm our students. This staff is doing it right…finally! We have a program that is building the right way, the Izzo way, and I am so excited.

Â
Chins up people, this is MSU and we have nothing to be down about. When we reach that level again, it will be worth it. Go Green!
