Will Tony Stewart Win the Nextel Cup? History Says It Could Happen
Tony Stewart won the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on Sunday for the second time in three years. That was a big accomplishment in itself but if you look at the history of the Brickyard, it says that Stewart has a bigger chance at winning the Nextel Cup this year than many people might be giving him credit for.
Of the past nine drivers who won the Nextel Cup, six of those drivers won the race at the Brickyard the year that they won the Cup. Jimmie Johnson won the race at the Brickyard in 2006 and went on to win his first Nextel Cup that same year. Same goes for Stewart the year before that when he won the Nextel Cup. Other drivers who have won the race at the Brickyard and the Nextel Cup in the same year are Jeff Gordon in 2001 and 1998, Bobby Labonte in 2000, and Dale Jarrett in 1999.
The other argument that people could make is that some of the drivers have had such a great season that Stewart just doesn’t have what some of the other drivers have to win and he might become one of the few that did not win both the race at the Brickyard and the Cup in the same year. Jeff Gordon has lead in points much of the season and if he continues to do well, he will be the one to beat when it comes down for the Chase for the Cup.
Everyone has always looked at the race at the Brickyard as one of the best of the season, even the mid-season Daytona as one of the drivers said the week leading up to it. But looking at the statistic that six of the last nine Cup winners also won at the Brickyard should tell you something else about the track.
So I leave you with this, will Tony Stewart make it seven of ten or be one of the few that could not do both?
