Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament: Day 1 recap

Minneapolis is the home for the 2024 Big Ten tournament.

The Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament is in Minneapolis this week and all of the action began Wednesday with a pair of games. 

No. 12 Maryland took down No. 13 Rutgers and then No. 11 Penn State advanced with a win over No. 14 Michigan. Those two winners advance to play in the second round on Thursday, when there are four games of note, including the hometown No. 9 Minnesota Gophers against No. 8 Michigan State. 

Here are the key stats and information from Day 1. 

Wednesday, March 13 (First Round)

#12 Maryland 65, #13 Rutgers 51

  • They split the regular season with Rutgers winning 56-53 on Feb. 6 and then Maryland took the second matchup 63-46 on Feb. 23.
  • Maryland opened on a 11-0 run, holding Rutgers scoreless through the opening 2:58 of the game.
  • Rutgers has hit just six of its 22 shots and trails 24-14 with just under six minutes left in the first half. 
  • Maryland owns a 36-22 lead at the half. Jahmir Young with six points, five boards and three assists while Donta Scott has nine points and five rebounds for the Terrapins.
  • Maryland opens the second half on a 11-2 run to open up a 23-point lead.
  • The Terrapins have 17 fastbreak points with 11 minutes left, holding a 21-point lead.
  • Maryland goes wire-to-wire and moves on to face Wisconsin Thursday after a 14-point victory.

#11 Penn State 66, #14 Michigan 57

  • Penn State beat Michigan 79-73 in their only meeting this season on Jan. 7. 
  • Ugly first nine minutes of the game as both teams are 3-of-12 shooting and Penn State leads 8-7. 
  • Michigan is 7-of-29 shooting and trails 33-22 at the half. 
  • Wolverines have hit nine of their 14 shots but trail 49-41 with about 11 minutes to go.
  • Penn State with a 12-point lead with two minutes to go. Looks like the Nittany Lions will move on. 
  • It’s a final. Penn State will face Indiana on Wednesday night.

Thursday, March 14 (Second Round)

  • #8 Michigan State vs. #9 Minnesota – 11 a.m. CT
  • #5 Wisconsin vs. #12 Maryland – 25 minutes after
  • #7 Iowa vs. #10 Ohio State – 5:30 p.m. CT
  • #6 Indiana vs. Penn State – 25 minutes after

The top four seeds, Purdue, Illinois, Nebraska and Northwestern, have the double bye and await the winners of the second round for Friday's quarterfinals. 

All games on Thursday and Friday will be televised on Big Ten Network. CBS will televise the semifinals and championship game on Saturday and Sunday.
