Gophers' Cam Christie named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

It's his second time receiving the honor.

Gophers men’s basketball guard Cam Christie was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday for the second time this season.

Christie scored 23 points in a 105-97 loss at then-No. 13 Illinois Thursday and had 19 in Saturday’s 75-70 home victory over Penn State. Christie shot a combined 11 for 26 (42%) from the field, including a 7-of-13 mark (54%) from 3, across the two games. Christie also tallied six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal for the week.

Perhaps none of the shots Christie hit were bigger than the 3-pointer made with 3 minutes, 49 seconds remaining in Saturday's game against Penn State, which gave Minnesota a 62-58 advantage, which was its largest lead at that point in the game.

Christie has been a huge part of a resurgent season for the Gophers this season. Minnesota is currently 18-11 with a 9-9 record in conference play. Christie is the team’s second-leading scorer at 11.9 points per game, and he also averages 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest.

Christie is shooting 43% from the field, 42% from 3 and 80% from the free-throw line.

Christie and the Gophers return to action on Wednesday to take on Indiana in their last home game of the season. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
