Gophers' regular season ends with blowout loss at Penn State

Minnesota mustered just 34 points in the loss, a season low.

It was a tough end to a trying season for the Gophers women’s basketball team, which got blown out 90-34 at Penn State Sunday afternoon in its regular-season finale.

It’s the Gophers’ fourth straight loss. The U will be playing on opening day of the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Wednesday at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Minnesota (15-14, 5-13 Big Ten) started the season strong, but injuries derailed its season down the stretch. Mara Braun has been out since Jan. 29 due to a foot injury. More recently, the U has also been down center Sophie Hart, who’s been dealing with a hip injury.

On Sunday, the Gophers were outscored in all four quarters, mustering just six points in the opening frame in a game they posted a season-low scoring total. Only Brynn Senden finished in double figures for the U with 10 points and a pair of rebounds.

Leilani Kapinus led Penn State (18-11, 9-9) in scoring with 23 points, and Shay Ciezki and Ashley Owusu tallied 15 points apiece. Chanaya Pinto added 10 points for the Nittany Lions.
