Gophers' Mya Hooten earns fourth Big Ten weekly honor

Senior was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on Tuesday.

Mya Hooten was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on Tuesday, marking the fourth time this season the Gophers gymnastics senior has received the honor.

It's her 10th Big Ten weekly honor overall.

At the Big Five meet this weekend, Hooten posted a 9.975 on floor to earn her sixth event title of the season on floor, a 9.900 on bars and a 9.825 on vault as the Gophers took a third-place finish (196.900) in Session 1.

Hooten is ranked No. 2 nationally on floor and is first in the Big Ten at the event. Her ranking on floor puts her in contention for a national title; Marie Roethlisberger is the Gophers’ only individual national champion, having won the uneven bars title in 1990.

NCAA Regionals take place from April 3-7.

The 15th-ranked Gophers return to action on March 1 when they travel to Boise State for a quad meet. It’s set to start at 8 p.m.
