Peyton Hemp lifts Gophers past Mavericks in overtime

Minnesota outlasts Minnesota State in low-scoring battle Saturday.

Peyton Hemp scored 54 seconds into overtime to lift the fifth-ranked Gophers women’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Minnesota State Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn.

Skylar Vetter stopped 15 of 16 shots for the Gophers (20-5-1) and Hailey Hansen had 26 saves on 28 Gophers shots for the Mavericks (10-17-0) on a day goals were few and far between.

After Josefin Bouveng scored 17 minutes, 58 seconds into the first period on a power play to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead, neither team could get a goal across until midway through the third period.

That came from Kennedy Bobyck, whose goal for the Mavericks tied the game at 1-1.

Bouveng’s first-period power-play goal extended her points streak to four games.

“Solid win here tonight,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said in a statement. “Great to get a sweep on the road with an overtime win tonight. Proud of our group and them finding a way, and we’re looking forward to next week.”

The Gophers return to action on Feb. 2-3 for a home series against St. Thomas. Friday’s puck drop is slated for 6 p.m.; Saturday’s 4:30 p.m.
