Wolfpack College Summer Baseball Update

Austin Murr got back over the .300, Jose Torres drove in two more runs while DeAngelo Giles got the night off Saturday among NC State baseball players in summer college wood bat league action

After seeing his average dip to a season-low .279 on Thursday, Austin Murr has bounced back with a vengeance to get back over the .300 mark.

The NC State first baseman did it by following up Friday's two-hit game with a 3 for 5 night for the LaaCrosse Loggers on Saturday in a 9-6 Northwoods League win against the Wisconsin Woodchucks.

Murr, batting in the third spot in the order, drove in his team's first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. He then helped ignite a game-breaking six-run outburst in the second with a single and a run scored.

With his five hits over the past two days, Murr is now hitting .314 for the summer (22 for 70 with eight doubles, five RBI and 13 runs scored in 17 games).

He was the only one of three Wolfpack baseball players to see action in an official game Saturday.

But he wasn't the only one who played in a game.

While Jose Torres and the Amarillo Sod Squad of the Texas Intercollegiate League scored an 8-3 win against the Texas Stix, the game was actually an exhibition and didn't count in the league standings.

According to a report in the Amarillo Globe-News, the Dallas-based Stix were called in as a last-minute replacement when the Frisco Roughriders didn't show up for a scheduled three-game series.

No reason was given for the change, although the Sod Squad had an earlier series in Tulsa canceled when several employees of the other team tested positive for COVID-19.

No boxscore was available for Saturday's game, but video provided by the team showed Torres driving in two runs with fourth inning single.

In 11 games that count in the TCL standings, Torres is hitting .298 with 11 RBI.

The third member of the State summer ball contingent, freshman infielder DeAngelo Giles, got the night off for the High Point-Thomasville HiToms in their 10-7 extra inning Coastal Plain League victory at Wilson.
