Huskers Dominate Seahawks on Historic Night
It was a night of history at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday as Nebraska women's basketball defeated UNC Wilmington 108-35.
Nebraska started off the game on an 8-0 run, inducing an early timeout from Seahawks head coach Nicole Woods. NU did not let its foot off the gas pedal after the timeout, going on a 23-7 run to end the quarter. The Big Red shot 12-of-19 from the field and 5-of-10 from 3 to lead 31-7.
Jaz Shelley had a stellar quarter, leading all scorers with eight points, seven assists, and five rebounds.
Quarter two saw much of the same. Freshman Logan Nissley caught fire, racking up 10 points on perfect shooting. Shelley added to her triple-double quest, leaving her two points and two rebounds away from being the first Husker to record two career triple-doubles.
After a phenomenal half on both sides of the court, NU went into the locker room leading 62-12. Nebraska shot 24-of-40 from the field as a team during the first half. The team's 62 points tied for the most in the first half in program history. Nebraska’s defense was also impressive. NU held UNC Wilmington to 12 points, the second-lowest total scored by an opponent in Husker history.
The story for the Cornhuskers was the same in quarter three. Nebraska outscored UNC Wilmington 21-10 and shot 60 percent from the court.
Shelley added three points and a rebound, putting her one away from a triple-double. Point guard Darian White found her stride in the quarter leading all scorers with six points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The fourth quarter was all about Shelley and her chase for history and Pinnacle Bank Arena knew the momentous feat she was on the brink of accomplishing.
After a couple of missed opportunities, Shelley corralled in her 10th rebound of the game with 4:57 left. The record-breaking board was met with an eruption of applause which was met with an even bigger eruption when Shelley dribbled the court and knocked down her fifth three of the contest.
Shelley finished the contest with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Big Red sealed the deal in the fourth quarter, winning the contest 108-35. It was the 10th-highest team score in program history and the third-largest margin of victory.
Nissley had a phenomenal game, finishing with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Alexis Markowski scored 18 points and hauled 12 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double.
Nebraska improved to 7-2 and will open Big Ten Conference play Saturday at Michigan State.
