Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert's future on the team is in jeopardy after an overnight arrest.

"I came into work today and got the phone call about Arik," head football coach Matt Rhule said Tuesday morning. "Really disappointed. Really sad for him.

"When we took Arik (in the transfer portal), we knew we had a good group of people that were gonna help him through some of the issues he's dealing with in his life."

Rhule said he was proud of the job Gilbert had done in the spring and summer.

"But to be honest, during camp, he's had some struggles," Rhule said. "He's been working to overcome them ... then last night happened."

Gilbert was arrested on suspicion of burglary after police say he was caught overnight at a Lincoln vape shop with more than $1,600 worth of stolen items.

"I'm not prepared to speak (about next steps)," Rhule added. "I've learned over the years not to jump to conclusions.

"I'm sure Trev (Alberts) and the people in the athletic department will have a lot to say."
