OSU Basketball: Insider Reveals Candidates For Head Coaching Vacancy

The Cowboys basketball head coaching search has been a mess and there’s a new list of candidates after recent hires around the sport.

The Oklahoma State basketball head coaching search has been reported as having been a mess up until this point. A job that should be considered a good job is losing its value day after day, and athletic director Chad Weiberg is reportedly getting aggressive with his offers.

It was time for a change in Stillwater for the basketball program, which saw Weiberg part ways with head coach Mike Boynton.

Since, prime head coaching candidates such as Danny Sprinkle, Dusty May and Darian DeVries have all been secured by Power Four programs, taking them off the market for Oklahoma State to pursue. With this, the program has to move on to a new list of candidates.

Basketball insider Adam Sagoria reported three names that are in the mix for the Oklahoma State basketball head coaching opening.

Niko Medved, Steve Alford and Bryce Drew were the three names reported by Sagoria.

Medved is currently the coach at Colorado State, where he just finished his sixth season with the program. He’s coming off his second NCAA Tournament appearance, which each of his appearances has come in the last three seasons.

The next name on the list is Alford, who currently coaches at Nevada. He’s the most experienced coach on the list, as he’s seen 13 NCAA Tournament appearances since becoming a head coach in 1995. He doesn’t quite fit the up-and-coming head coaching bill, but he does bring tournament experience and made an appearance in the past two NCAA Tournaments.

The final coach mentioned by Sagoria is Bryce Drew, who currently coaches at Grand Canyon University, where he’s made three NCAA Tournament appearances in his four years as the head coach there. He’s been a head coach for 12 years, making six tournament appearances in that stretch.

Of the three coaches, Drew might be the best candidate given his blend of climbing the head coaching ranks while holding NCAA Tournament experience. It’ll be intriguing to follow what level of interest the three coaches even hold in Oklahoma State.

The Cowboys need to make a hire soon so they can make some noise in the transfer portal and bring some buzz back to the basketball program in Stillwater.
