Cowboys Enjoying Much Needed Break Ahead of Baylor

Oklahoma State is in in a much-needed open week after playing half the season

STILLWATER -- We're a little over seven weeks into the 2019-20 football season and Oklahoma State is getting their first real breather. The Cowboys have been going non-stop since the first week of August with fall camp and it started to show last week with the loss to Texas Tech.

"It's been a pretty good stretch," Mike Gundy said . "I wish we would've had an open week earlier; I'm not sure why we got stuck in the situation we did, not that it had a factor, but you'd like to have one after three or four [games] because you've got to take August into consideration. If you can get an open week after week three, that's still seven weeks straight, that's a lot for these guys. But either way, it came at a good time for all of us. Everybody needs a little bit of a break and enjoy themselves, some of them go see their friends, or family, or girlfriends or whatever then get back to work on Sunday."

Not just for the starters, but it's a great time for some of the younger players and the scout team as the coaches are able to rotate those guys in more.

"Basic fundamentals," Gundy said about practice. "Just like August, a lot of really quality reps for the young guys that haven't got as much work on game day. The varsity got a little bit, but not as much; the majority was young guys."

But these practices are certainly beneficial for the starters as well. It doesn't matter how much someone loves something, everyone needs a little bit of a break where there's not much pressure and that's exactly what these guys are getting.

"It was fun, today was very loud," said Gundy. "A couple of times, I thought - you know like in high school and you have a fight in the cafeteria, you know that sound? That's what was going on, they were all competing and having fun. So, both practices were good practices."

The Cowboys, while they're getting their much-needed breather, are also preparing for a tough Baylor squad they'll face next week for Homecoming. As coach Gundy said, the team is taking it a little bit easier this week, but still working hard towards getting back in the win column and will be back in full action this coming Sunday.
