Carson May is Grabbing Attention and is Proving He is a Division I QB Recruit

Carson May came out last Friday night and along with the Jones Longhorns offense put on a second half explosion in a 40-16 win over Luther.

JONES -- It was halftime Friday night at Tim Wallace Stadium and the home crowd was kind of mulling around in a daze that was a reflection of the football they watched their Jones Longhorns play the first half. The scoreboard showed Jones leading Luther 12-2, but the first half had been anything but exciting. Lots of penalties and by Longhorn standards on offense very pedestrain, almost boring? 

"Coach (Dave Martin) told us we were not executing and we had too many penalties," said sensational junior quarterback Carson May. "Coach really got on our butts at halftime."

Well, it worked as the Longhorns came out and wasted no time in getting a three and out on defense and then May after a pair of handoffs used his powerful right arm to rifle the ball downfield to receiver Trey Dorrell and with one juke Dorrell was free and completed the 39-yard touchdown play, the first of two hookups between May and Dorrell in a dominating third quarter on the way to a 40-16 win. In that third quarter, May was 8-for-8 passing for 185-yards and the two touchdowns to Dorrell.

"You know he broke his leg last year," May told me on Sunday of Dorrell, preferring to brag on his receiver over himself. "He has come back and worked hard and is stronger and he has come out strong this season."

I really like May. In our interview on Sunday, he talked more in terms of team and used we and never I in his comments. That said, even with the below average first half, May finished the game 14-of-24 for 320-yards and three touchdowns and then also ran 11 times for 110-yards and two scores. 

"I do think we're getting better," May said. "We lost some good players but guys are stepping up. Yes, I think I'm getting better. I feel way faster and more explosive."

I asked May about his recruiting and he said like it was for many in the junior class that Sept. 1 was a special day. 

"Coach (Tim) Rattay was the first to contact me," May said of the Oklahoma State quarterbacks coach. California called me quickly and Baylor and New Mexico are the schools that are contacting me the most."

I had two folks in the stands at Jones say that if Oklahoma State were to offer the 6-5, 210-pound May that it would be over and that he would commit and be done. I'm not sure it is that simple, but there is an interest for sure. 

This week Jones will have a nice challenge as the Longhorns travel to face defending Class 3A State Champions Lincoln Christian. That will be fun to see how it turns out and how May plays against a fairly salty defensive unit the Bulldogs have.
